All Things D reports that:
Consumers Don?t Want Tablets, They Want iPads
This conclusion is based on the results of surveys in the U.S. and U.K. by Bernstein Research. They asked 200 people in the U.S. and U.K. ?Which brand do you think you will choose for your tablet?? They were given eight brands (Apple, BlackBerry, Samsung, HTC, Motorola, Nokia, Dell and HP) as well as the option to choose ?no preference.? My observation is that sample sizes of 100 people per country is too low for a survey of this kind with so many options (9) to choose from. However, assuming the design is statistically valid, the findings for the second and third choices are quite interesting.
Fifty percent of people in both the U.S. and U.K. samples reported they would choose Apple for a tablet. In the U.K., Samsung came in second with 13%. In the U.S., Dell came in second with 12%. The second choice finish by Dell is surprising given the relatively lack of market share by its Streak line of Android tablets. I would have guessed the Samsung or Motorola would have gotten the nod.
Garnering the third place position in both U.K. and U.S. survey ws ?No preference? with 11% and 8% of the stated brand preference.
There?s no question in my mind that the iPad is the preferred tablet at the moment. A simple look at how people voted with their wallet will tell you that. But, second place is a very important position to hold in a potentially huge market. And, I wonder how the results of this particular survey generalizes to a larger more complex population than the 200 people surveyed.
