Egyptian reportedly beheaded by Sinai militants

Egyptian police said they found a decapitated head in Sinai on Friday of a man kidnapped by Islamist militants, reportedly for his role in assassinating an extremist.

A security official said another man, also accused in the assassination, was believed to have been kidnapped by the Bedouin militants.

Bedouin tribal sources said the head found in the Muqatta area in north Sinai belonged to Manazil Bereikat from the same tribe of an extremist killed in a mysterious explosion near the Israeli border on August 26.

At the time, witnesses said the militant, Ibrahim Ouda Bereikat, died in a blast as he tried to fire a rocket into Israel. Security sources said he might have been killed by a landmine.

A Bedouin source, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject, said the militants behind Manazil's kidnapping accused him and several other men of planting a booby trap to assassinate Ouda Bereikat.

Ouda Bereikat was believed to have taken part in several rocket attacks against Israel. The militants, and his family members, believe his assassins worked with Israel and said Manazil should not be given a Muslim burial.

"No one is willing to touch the body, he will not be buried, even his relatives don't want to bury him," said another Bedouin source.

The security official said two other men the militants were hunting to avenge Ouda Bereikat's death fled across the border into Israel.

The Egyptian military and police have bolstered their presence in the lawless peninsula to battle Islamist militants after gunmen killed 16 soldiers at a border outpost on August 5.

The military on Wednesday said it has killed 11 militants and arrested 23 since the start of the unprecedented campaign involving tanks and helicopters.

Apple's (AAPL) big patent-infringement legal win over Samsung in U.S. courts is not carrying over to other parts of the world.

A Tokyo judge on Friday ruled that Samsung Electronics didn't infringe on Apple patents related to smartphones and tablet computers synchronizing music and video data with servers.

Apple was ordered by Tokyo District Judge Tamotsu Shoji to pay costs of the lawsuit after his verdict, Bloomberg reported. South Korea-based Samsung's shares rose 1.5% on the Seoul exchange Friday.

Apple's U.S. shares, though, were up a fraction in early U.S. trading Friday, at 667.30, near their all-time high of 680.87 touched on Monday, the first trading day after the U.S. verdict was announced late Aug. 24.

That verdict was a resounding legal win for the Cupertino, Calif.-based iPhone maker.

But earlier on Aug. 24, a Korean court ruled that Apple and Samsung had infringed on one another's patents, and Apple in general hasn't seen resounding legal wins worldwide. And the legal battles between the two leading makers of smartphones is far from over, as we've reported.

U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh is slated to rule Sept. 20 on Apple's request, following the Aug. 24 verdict, to block U.S. sales of eight Samsung products. Samsung is fighting the request.

And Reuters reported late Thursday that Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Larry Page have had behind-the-scenes talks regarding patents. Samsung, and many others, makes smartphones and tablets based on Google's open-source Android operating system. Apple's win over Samsung was widely viewed as also a win over Google and Android.

Chelsea?vs. Juventus in Champions League group

By DANIELLA MATAR

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:46 p.m. ET Aug. 30, 2012

MONTE CARLO, Monaco (AP) - Champions League winner Chelsea will begin the defense of its title at home against Italian giant Juventus, while Real Madrid will face Manchester City in the tournament's toughest group.

Thursday's draw for the group stage pitched the holders against a Juventus side that stormed to the Serie A title and was unbeaten in all competitions last season apart from the Italian Cup final. Group E also includes Shakhtar Donetsk and Champions League debutant Nordsjaelland of Denmark.

Madrid has been handed the toughest draw - with three league champions in Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund and Ajax in Group D. The Spanish champion beat Ajax 3-0 both home and away in last season's competition.

It begins its bid for a record 10th title at home against the Premier League champions.

"We didn't have much luck but I'm sure our rivals will think the same," Real Madrid director and former playing great Emilio Butragueno said. "It's a very tough group, all of the games are going to be very close, very competitive, very tense.

"We have to prepare. We're Real Madrid and we aspire to reach the end of this competition."

With all four teams winning their leagues last year, it is no surprise Group D has been pinpointed as the toughest group.

"This group is a fantastic story. It gives you goose bumps, cramps your nerves," Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said. "Of course Real and City deal in (financial) sums that we cannot match. But this is not going to inhibit us.

"We want to be an uncomfortable opponent. We don't want to compete in the sense who is prettier, who is bigger, who is more expensive."

Juventus should qualify for the knockout stage, along with Chelsea, which knocked the Serie A side out of the competition in 2009.

"We're happy to be back on this stage," Juventus general director Giuseppe Marotta said. "All in all we're satisfied with this group, although we're full of humility and we've got total respect for our opponents."

Meanwhile, Nordsjaelland is expected to do little more than make up the numbers in Group E.

"It is a great group," midfielder Mikkel Beckhmann said. "It has got to be the second hardest group, but also the second greatest, so I am pleased. Juventus are my favorite team, and I am really looking forward to the away match there and the one against Chelsea. "

Bayern Munich, last season's runner-up, is in Group F with Valencia as well as Lille and BATE Borisov.

Four-time winner Barcelona faces Benfica, Spartak Moscow and Celtic.

"It looks like a footballing group, with historic teams and teams with different styles," Barcelona sport director Andoni Zubizarreta said. "It might not have the big names like the other groups but it's still interesting."

Manchester United, which failed to clear the group stage last season, also has a relatively weak group with Braga, Galatasaray and Cluj.

"We have the experience of playing against Galatasaray in the past and we will always remember the `Welcome to Hell' banners," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "So it's always a difficult type of match.

Seven-time winner AC Milan was drawn with Zenit St. Petersburg, Anderlecht and Malaga - another Champions League debutant.

French champion Montpellier makes its debut in the competition against Arsenal, Schalke and Olympiakos. Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud scored 21 goals for Montpellier last season, finishing as the joint top scorer in the French league.

Big-spending Paris Saint-Germain returns to the Champions League after an eight-year absence and will play Porto, Dynamo Kiev and Dinamo Zagreb.

Rubio: Both parties need to improve with Hispanics - KansasCity.com

The Associated Press

Updated: 2012-08-29T12:11:51Z

Sen. Marco Rubio says both political parties need to do more to address the needs of Hispanic Americans.

The Florida Republican was reacting to comments from Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who said the array of Hispanic speakers at the GOP convention isn't enough for Mitt Romney to woo Latino voters.Rubio, who will formally introduce Romney before he accepts the GOP presidential nomination, says Republicans can't just be the anti-illegal immigration party, they have to be the "pro legal immigration party."He tells ABC's "Good Morning America" there are problems with Obama's decision to stop deporting younger illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children. Romney has promised to change that strategy but has not specified how.Polls have shown Romney struggling to gain traction with Latino voters.

Chemical exposure in the womb from household items may contribute to obesity

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Pregnant women who are highly exposed to common environmental chemicals -- polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs) -- have babies that are smaller at birth and larger at 20 months of age, according to a study from Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health published online in the August 30 edition of Environmental Health Perspectives.

PFCs are used in the production of fluoropolymers and are found widely in protective coatings of packaging products, clothes, furniture and non-stick cookware. They are persistent compounds found abundantly in the environment and human exposure is common. PFCs have been detected in human sera, breast milk and cord blood.

The study, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, included 447 British girls and their mothers in the United Kingdom participating in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, a large-scale health research project that has provided a vast amount of genetic and environmental information since it began in the early 1990s.

The researchers found that even though girls with higher exposure were smaller than average (43rd percentile) at birth, they were heavier than average (58th percentile) by 20 months of age. The authors say this path may lead to obesity at older ages.

"Previous animal and human research suggests prenatal exposures to PFCs may have harmful effects on fetal and postnatal growth," says lead researcher Michele Marcus, MPH, PhD, a professor of epidemiology in Emory's Rollins School of Public Health and the assistant program director at Kaiser Permanente's Center for Health Research.

"Our findings are consistent with these studies and emerging evidence that chemicals in our environment are contributing to obesity and diabetes and demonstrate that this trajectory is set very early in life for those exposed."

According to Marcus, a recent study in Denmark found that women exposed to PFCs in the womb were more likely to be overweight at age 20. And experimental studies with mice have shown that exposure in the womb led to higher levels of insulin and heavier body weight in adulthood.

Marcus and her colleagues focused on the three most studied PFCs: perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFS), perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS).

The researchers measured maternal serum concentrations of PFOS, PFOA and PFHxS during pregnancy and obtained data on the weight and length of the girls at birth, 2, 9 and 20 months. They explored associations between prenatal PFC concentrations and weight at birth as well as changes in weight-for-age scores between birth and 20 months.

Studying Instead of Sleeping Bites Students

60-Second Science

Students who studied a lot at the expense of sleep had significantly more negative incidents, such as not understanding a lecture, as those who kept a more balanced study schedule. Christie Nicholson reports

More 60-Second Science

Before a big exam we?ve all been tempted to cram at the expense of a good night's sleep. But sleep is just as critical for school success as reviewing those notes. In fact, compromising on sleep can negate any advantage from extra studying.

In a new study, scientists had more than 500 high school students document how long they studied and slept over two weeks. They also had them note any negatives during that period?things like not understanding a lecture.

The researchers found that the students who studied a lot at the expense of sleep had significantly more issues than those who kept a more balanced study schedule. The academic issues typically came the day after sacrificing sleep. The study is the journal Child Development. [Cari Gillen-O?Neel, Virginia W. Huynh and Andrew J. Fuligni, To Study or to Sleep? The Academic Costs of Extra Studying at the Expense of Sleep]

Overall, those students who studied the most still had the best grades. But researchers note that those same students tended to keep a consistent schedule, and did not vary the length of study or sleep time. It was the irregular sleep schedules in particular that correlated with more academic problems.

Another case in point to support the tortoise way: slow and steady wins the race, even academically.

Basic Info if You're Considering Bankruptcy | Personal Finance Blog

For some, bankruptcy is an easy way out. For others, it is the last resort they hoped never to come to. Because it is such a big deal in a person?s financial life, there have come to be a wide array of misunderstandings that go along with it. In recent years, several changes have taken place in how bankruptcy is filed, as well as how and what type of debts can be expunged using the bankruptcy process. One notable example is student loans. In order for student loans to be erased, you have to show that they present an ?undue hardship? under the law.

First off, bankruptcy doesn?t mean that you?re going to lose everything. This misconception may have more to do with ?Wheel of Fortune? or ?Monopoly,? but it isn?t reality. In most cases, bankruptcy liquidation means that extraneous things are sold off to pay your debts. Coin collections, art, antiques and furniture are typically attached, but not always, and then only under chapter 7 bankruptcy. Chapter 13 is another beast all together.

Chapter 7 bankruptcy is total liquidation of assets under court order with exclusions. These exclusions are like an allowance given to you by the court that you can use to ?purchase? some of your possessions back from the bankruptcy sale. These might include your vehicle, tools that you work with, and even musical instruments. How much you can retain during bankruptcy proceedings is different in every state and can be subject to the discretion of the bankruptcy court. For example, in some states, law allows you to retain up to $3,500 for a vehicle. That means that if your car books for $3,000, you can keep it. If it is worth $4,000, then the car will be sold, you will be given $3,500, and your creditors will be given $500 toward your debt.

In Chapter 13, you may not have to give up anything that you own free and clear. Of course, Chapter 13 bankruptcy differs from Chapter 7 in that you do have to pay back your debts, but the payments on those debts are structured in such a way that you can, based on your current income, pay them off. While 7 is basically for those who have no way of paying their debts whatsoever, 13 is a restructuring of those debts to make them more manageable.

Declaring bankruptcy is no small matter, and should never be entered into lightly. The existence of a bankruptcy of any type on your credit report will negatively impact your credit rating for at least 10 years, meaning that loans you apply for will charge you higher interest rates, and you may not qualify at all for some forms of credit. It can impact your ability to get a job or to find an apartment, much less purchase a home. While it may seem like an easy escape from under a mountain of debt, it is critical that every other option is exhausted first. If you feel as though you have no other option but to file for bankruptcy, choose a legal professional who has a strong reputation within your community.

Apple's Win Over Samsung Is The First Step In Its 'Thermonuclear ...

Score this round in the battle for world domination: Apple (AAPL) 1, Google (GOOG) 0. While Apple won a billion-dollar jury verdict last week in a patent dispute with Samsung, experts say the trial was just one front in a broader war between the Cupertino computer-maker and its Mountain View rival, Google, whose Android mobile software outranks Apple?s as the world?s leading smartphone platform. The jury?s?verdict is widely seen as a setback for the ?Android ecosystem? of hardware manufacturers, including Samsung, and application developers who use Google?s mobile software. But it?s not a death blow, according to industry experts, who say the outcome won?t end a growing rivalry between Apple and Google that extends from smartphones to online maps, books, videos and even tools for seeking information online. ?Samsung is just collateral damage,? said Roger Kay, a longtime industry analyst. ?I think Apple?s going to try to use this victory as a way to beat on Google further.? Android?s success is vastly important to Google, which developed the software as part of its strategy for delivering lucrative advertising, information and?services to the growing numbers of people who use smartphones and tablets instead of personal computers to go online. Analysts say any blow to Android is a threat to Google?s ability to keep pace with the mobile computing trend. A nine-member jury in San Jose?s federal court concluded Friday that several of Samsung?s Android-based devices infringed some of Apple?s patented designs and technology. Some experts say the verdict could force Samsung or other manufacturers to change their products?or even negotiate licensing payments with Apple. But several analysts also said that?s unlikely to stop manufacturers from using Android. The verdict ?is unambiguously negative for Google and the Android ecosystem,? Bernstein Research analyst A.M. Sacconaghi wrote in a report Monday, adding that the outcome is likely to ?embolden Apple?s legal strategy? against other smartphone and tablet-makers. ?That said, we don?t think it?s a game-changing loss for Android,? he added, because the verdict only affects certain older Samsung models sold in the U.S. market, while Android is used in a wide variety of gadgets sold around the world. Despite the iPhone?s phenomenal success, the number of smartphones sold by all manufacturers?using Android is even larger. Android has become so popular, in part, because Google doesn?t charge device-makers to use the software, which can lower the price for consumers, too. Google makes money by selling ads and targeting services to consumers who use its software, although it closely guards the details of its mobile revenue stream. Several analysts said it shouldn?t be difficult for Samsung and other smartphone makers to alter designs and replace features that infringe on Apple?s patents. ?None of these patents are impossible to work around,? said Van Baker, a mobile technology expert at the Gartner research firm. ?This won?t require anyone to go back and completely redefine their products.? Apple?s late CEO, Steve Jobs, launched a series of patent infringement lawsuits against Samsung and other Android device-makers after famously complaining that he felt Google had copied Apple?s iPhone. Jobs vowed to wage ?thermonuclear war? to destroy Android, even though Google maintains it developed Android independently. While Apple applauded the jury Friday for protecting its intellectual property, Google issued a statement Sunday that essentially cautioned against reading too much into the decision. ?The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims. Most of these don?t relate to the core Android operating system, and several are being re-examined by the U.S. Patent Office,? a Google spokesman said. ?The mobile industry is moving fast and all players ? including newcomers ? are building upon ideas that have been around for decades.? Some observers believe the flurry of lawsuits over mobile software patents will end only when all parties agree to financial settlements, in which some companies agree to pay royalties for others? technology. Faced with the prospect of paying royalties for using Android, manufacturers might consider switching to software made by Microsoft or someone else, Sacconaghi wrote. But that seems unlikely, he added, since Android is already popular with so many consumers. Manufacturers will also hesitate to abandon Android?s deep inventory of software applications that run on its platform, he noted. Android has far more apps than Microsoft, though still fewer than Apple. Blur is either shoring up its legacy to strengthen the band?s next chapter or capping it off for posterity ? Damon Albarn?s assessment of the reunited group?s life expectancy seems to change daily. Whether Blur has no distance left to run or has hope for tomorrow, the raucously remarkable ?Parklive,? released days after the group?s massive concert in London?s Hyde Park at the close of the Summer Olympic Games, makes the case that the love affair between Blur and its British fans is reaching fever pitch.

For such a quick turnaround, ?Parklive? sounds crisp and expertly mastered, but the short time between concert and marketplace also kept the band or any other powers that be from fussing over it. This is, after all, a document of how about 100,000 people bonded with Albarn, guitarist Graham Coxon, bassist Alex James and drummer Dave Rowntree, and throughout ?Parklive,? they all come on like the biggest hooligan backup choir on record. As Coxon begins playing the signature guitar line from ?Tender,? the audience immediately starts singing the ?Oh my baby? refrain, and on several tracks, including ?Country House,? the crowd seems to be fighting Albarn for lead vocal duties.

Just before this performance, EMI/Parlophone released ?Blur 21,? an expansive career retrospective that included nearly every note the band recorded, from 1991?s ?She?s So High? through last month?s ?Under the Westway.? It also contained two concert DVDs, and yet there is no question that ?Parklive? is Blur?s definitive concert document. The proof takes place when Phil Daniels, who played Jimmy the Mod in ?Quadrophenia,? reprises his role as narrator on 1994?s ?Parklife,? barking out his lines and whipping the audience into what sounds like a football riot. That intensity never relents in the set, replicated in the rabid reception for ?Song 2,? ?End of the Century,? ?For Tomorrow? and the majestic closer, ?The Universal.? Like the past bands they admired or the contemporaries who they fought for Brit-pop supremacy, Blur deals with the kind of internal struggles that could send them into permanent past tense at any moment, hence Albarn?s waffling over the band?s future. But ?Parklive? is proof that Britain and much of the rest of the world needs them around long after the London games recede into history.

Robot drivers learn to react like startled critters

17 hrs.

Robot drivers of the future may steer clear of potholes, toppled power lines and stray cats thanks to an artificial neural network modeled after the fear-response mechanism in mammals.

The system, called STARTLE, uses existing hardware and sensors to scan the environment for threats. If one is detected, it will cue other systems to deal with it swiftly.

The system is programmed to kick into gear when it notices something abnormal. That could be a pothole, which it focuses resources to steer around, or?a child running out into the street after a soccer ball, prompting it to hit the brakes.

New Scientist has the details:

The design mimics the amygdala, which provides a rapid response to threats. The amygdala helps small animals to deal with complex, fast-changing surroundings, allowing them to ignore most sensory stimuli.

STARTLE was developed Roke Manor Research, a Hampshire, England, based research and development firm that boasts a ?diverse portfolio of products protecting military people and platforms against a constantly changing threat.?

With that kind of background, we can expect to see STARTLE outfitted on tanks and Humvees, but this type of technology will almost certainly find a home in the robot cars destined to soon clog our roadways.?

In fact, similar safety mechanisms are under development at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where robotic co-pilots take over the wheel when it senses a driver is about to crash.

Red Cross to resume but scale back ops in Pakistan

GENEVA (AP) ? The Red Cross plans to resume but on a vastly smaller scale some of the work that it suspended in Pakistan after the killing of a British nurse it employed, officials said Tuesday.

After a major internal review, the Geneva-based International Committee of the Red Cross said it has decided to continue its work in Pakistan but to more than halve its 1,256 staff, cease visiting detainees and curtail operations that will have major impacts felt throughout the nation.

Jacques de Maio, the ICRC's head of operations for South Asia, told The Associated Press that his organization will focus almost exclusively on health care for Pakistanis, particularly those severely wounded in fighting.

Though the review was prompted by the April 2012 slaying of Khalil Rasjed Dale in Quetta, Pakistan, it extended to a range of factors that went well beyond just safety and looked at whether each of the operations the Red Cross was supporting could justified, he said.

As a result, the ICRC plans to reduce its operations from 1,256 staff in 10 offices down to about 500 in just two offices. Most of the staff members are Pakistanis, and the expatriates among them will be cut from 126 to about 40, said de Maio.

The organization had shut down most of its operations due to the killing of Dale, a British Red Cross worker who served as a health program manager. His kidnapping in January and subsequent brutal slaying ? police said his throat was slit and a note attached to his body saying he was killed because no ransom was paid ? had stunned the organization and its workers.

"It was a massive blow" to the ICRC, de Maio said.

The body of Dale, 60, was dumped close to the southwestern city of Quetta on April 29. The veteran aid worker had been kidnapped in the city in January. No arrests have been made in connection with his killing.

Islamist militants, separatist gangs and criminals with links to both have been accused of previous kidnappings in Baluchistan, a poor province close to the Afghanistan where Pakistan's government has little control.

The ICRC has been helping victims of violence and natural disaster in Pakistan since 1947. De Maio says the capacity of the Red Cross to respond to man-made disasters and displacement of people due to armed violence will be affected. "We are terminating all relief programs in parts of the country which are extremely vulnerable to insecurity from violence but also natural disasters such as floods," he said.

Paul Castella, head of ICRC's delegation in Islamabad, said the organization will continue to work in Pakistan only if conditions are adequate. ICRC will coordinate with Pakistan authorities to reopen its surgical hospital in Peshawar, he said, but the ICRC has decided to keep operations closed in the provinces of Khyber, Pukhtunkhwa and Sindh.

The ICRC has been helping victims of violence and natural disaster in Pakistan since 1947.

Another one of the biggest consequences of the Red Cross' pullback will be hard to measure.

That involves Red Cross visits to Pakistan's civilian and military facilities, where tens of thousands of detainees are held, among them many Pakistanis and Afghans. The Geneva-based organization's neutrality and its global stature and duty as the arbiter of the rules of war lend it a unique role in the monitoring of prison conditions worldwide.

Among the facilities are an unknown number of Pakistan's "missing" ? people who have been seized by security forces for months or years and are never brought to trial, their families never informed of their fate.

Many of the men are presumed to be suspected Islamist militants, swept up in a post-Sept. 11, 2001, crackdown supported by the United States. Some are alleged to have been killed or tortured in custody.

Former President Pervez Musharraf wrote in his memoir in 2006 that Pakistani security forces had captured 689 terrorists and handed over 369 to the United States. Musharraf, who allied Pakistan with Washington after 2001, said that action earned the country millions of dollars in bounties. Many wound up at the U.S. detention center in Guantanamo Bay, and the Red Cross had contacted the relatives of Pakistanis held at the camp.

Packers don't?need Benson

Adding a 1,000-yard rusher who can't catch and lacks speed hardly helps Packers

Image: Cedric BensonGetty Images

Cedric Benson is a 1,000-yard rusher, but that doesn't mean he'll add punch to the Green Bay offense.

By Scott Kacsmar

NBCSports.com

updated 3:07 a.m. ET Aug. 28, 2012

Think back to two moments from the 2005 NFL Draft: Cedric Benson?s tearful outburst when he was chosen No. 4 pick overall by the Chicago Bears, and Aaron Rodgers sitting in the green room for hours, waiting to hear his name called.

Rodgers did not cry, or at least ESPN did not capture any tears in what had to be a difficult moment. But good things come to those who wait, and Green Bay selecting Rodgers 24th overall was a blessing in disguise.

Seven years later, Rodgers and Benson unite for what will likely be the starting backfield in Green Bay?s offense.

Their first game together last Thursday night in Cincinnati was successful, with Benson carrying the ball six times for 38 yards. However, the Packers? leading rusher was actually Rodgers with six carries for 52 yards and a pair of touchdowns on scrambles.

When Rodgers recently said the Packers need to show they can run the ball, it is unlikely he had himself in mind. His stance has taken on a much different tone from July when he replied ?Do we need to?? when asked about being able to run the ball.

His initial response was the right one. After one of the most prolific offensive seasons in NFL history, why would you start delegating to a player with a checkered past like Benson? Coach Mike McCarthy has history and great results on his side to avoid just that.

Green Bay?s unique QB-driven offense
Quarterbacks want the ball in their hands, and McCarthy puts the ball in Rodgers? hands often.

Rodgers averages 39.4 drop backs per start (passes, sacks and runs), which is the second highest average in NFL history (min. 60 starts). As shown in Table 1, only Daunte Culpepper has averaged more.

Highest average of drop backs per start

Rank Quarterback Games started Drop backs
1 Daunte Culpepper 100 39.6
2 Aaron Rodgers 62 39.4
3 Donovan McNabb 161 39.3
4 Aaron Brooks 90 39.1
5 Drew Bledsoe 193 39.1
6 Randall Cunningham 135 39.0
7 Jon Kitna 124 38.9
8 Drew Brees 153 38.8
9 Warren Moon 203 38.2
10 Kurt Warner 116 37.7

Brett Favre averaged 38.6 drop backs per start in two seasons under McCarthy (2006-07). Running this type of offense in Vince Lombardi's era would have been blasphemy, but football has evolved dramatically.

Packers don?t need no stinkin? run game
The Packers' rushing issues the last four season aren't a secret. But does this matter in today?s NFL?

If you have an elite quarterback, you can consistently win without a running game. Whether it?s rushing for under 100 yards or not exceeding 30 carries, the teams with the very best quarterbacks are the ones that still win those types of games.

Of course, what separates Rodgers from the other elite quarterbacks is the way he takes matters into his own hands in the running game, scrambling for yards to inflate his team?s rushing statistics. That is why it?s good to remove quarterback carries from a team?s rushing stats to get a better sense of their intended ground game (handoffs only).

When you remove Rodgers from the stats, the results of Green Bay?s rushing offense are not pretty. In his 68 career starts (including playoffs), the Packers only average 21.9 carries for 88.2 yards (4.02 yards per carry). In spite of the running game, their record is 45-23 (.662).

In fact, no matter what Green Bay does on the ground, Rodgers usually plays at a high level, as seen in Table 2.

Rodgers' passing stats vs. rushing production

Rush yards Record Att. Comp. Pct. Yds. YPA TD INT Rating
125+ 8-2 311 198 63.7 2,562 8.24 19 6 101.8
100-124 9-3 375 259 69.1 3,245 8.65 26 5 113.3
75-99 14-3 603 411 68.2 5,143 8.53 52 9 111.4
60-74 9-8 554 349 63.0 4,461 8.05 36 14 99.3
<60 5-7 431 273 63.3 3,407 7.90 23 7 98.8

When Green Bay rushed for a season-high 138 yards against Oakland last year, it was the first game all season where Rodgers did not have a passer rating over 100.0. It was also the first time he did not complete at least 60 percent of his passes. Rodgers was 17 of 30 (56.7 percent) with a 96.7 passer rating.

So much for the ?running game opening up the passing game? theory.

If the Packers fail to even average 3.0 YPC (13 games), Rodgers still has a 103.6 passer rating. When they average over 5.0 YPC (11 games), which is supposed to signify great rushing, Rodgers has a 100.8 passer rating.

See the big picture? No matter what Green Bay does on the ground, the Packers win and lose depending on Rodgers and the defense. His passing performances are still usually great and independent of their rushing ability.

Initial evidence points to the running game and passing game being independent of each other. If an offense wants to be one-dimensional, it can be successful as long as they have the right talent and mindset for it like Green Bay.

Why do you think many of the best running backs ? such as Adrian Peterson, Maurice Jones-Drew, and Chris Johnson ? have been on some of the worst offenses in the league in recent years?

Likewise, we keep seeing teams excel in the passing game without any real threat of the run, such as the Super Bowl champion New York Giants. The Packers have been doing it for years under McCarthy.

Athlete of the Week - Grand Strand Sports Report

Some people are just naturally good at everything, it seems.

For 10-year-old Tyler Flannelly, the signs are already there that the Myrtle Beach triathlete has joined that group.

Flannelly is the official winner of the Mammy?s Kitchen Athlete of the Week award after garnering 5,700 votes. His nomination came after winning the Fourth Annual Myrtle Beach Kids Triathlon.

Flanelly was the overall winner in the race, swimming 200 yards, cycling 10K (6.2 miles) and running 2k (1.3 miles). The full-length race was for ages 11-15. Flannelly?s birthday put him just on the other side of the age line, competing with much older kids. This is the third year in a row that Flannelly has won the overall portion,? however the previous year?s wins came in the younger division, which runs just a half course.

Flannelly is just a natural athlete, regularly competing in 5k events, along with his participation in lacrosse, football, baseball, and basketball. He?s a member of the Myrtle Beach Dune Warriors, summer league lacrosse team, his favorite sport of all. He?s also currently playing running back for a Myrtle Beach recreation league football team, the Steelers.

Triathlons seem to come easy for Flannelly though, ?I had plenty of energy after I got out of the water. When I got off the bike, I was thinking to myself, this is the last part and you have to run your hardest,? said Flannelly.

Flannelly originally saw a flyer for the Triathlon and thought ?I just wanted to do the sport. It has all the sports I like so, why don?t I try.? Running is where he excels and even competes with the Myrtle Beach Track and Field Club during their spring and summer season.

An A and B student in school, he?s very encouraging of the other competitors. His mother Jami says ?He?s a good kid; he?s got a big heart. He really enjoys cheering on the other kids and getting them to work hard. He?s very encouraging.? She went on to say, ?He?s got a competitive drive like I?ve never seen. Everything he does, he does well. He?s just determined. We took him surfing for the first time a few days ago, and he stood up on his second try.?

Flannelly was quick to note that his sister Kailey was his inspiration and that he also loves music and likes to draw.

Well rounded, and liked by others. Tyler Flannelly seems like the perfect recipient for the Mammy?s Kitchen Athlete of the Week award. One wouldn?t have to be a fortune teller to see that this young man is going to win this award multiple times, just like he has the Myrtle Beach Kids Triathlon.

What would it take to have my own home improvement show on ...

What would it take to have my own home improvement show on HGTV or DIY?Reviewed by Homedesign on Aug 28.Rating:

AHG desk receive an email asking a question about What would it take to have my own home improvement show on HGTV or DIY?. I?m 15 now, but when I get older, I would like to host my own home improvement show. It would be entirely for electrical work, which is something I hardly ever see described in detail on the channel. In the first episode, I would show simple stuff like replacing switches, outlets, and fixtures. In later episodes, I would show how to add new circuits to the breaker panel. In a late episode, I would actually take the viewers from start to finish in doing a complete service panel upgrade (from 60A meter and fuse box to 100A meter and circuit breaker panel). I?ve never seen anything like that on TV before. I?m only 15, but I?ve done all these things myself on my own house, so I?m competent in the trade. I would like to be an electrician when I grow up.

Here my answer base on my experience?
Wow!

Write the goal down. Put it on your fridge or somewhere like that and see it and think about it every day. If you do that you will bring it into your life. You have a natural talent for it and you already believe that you can do it. That is the most important thing. Besides that you are one of the few fifteen year olds around today that can write properly. Sorry I cannot give you specific advice. Good luck!

A Young Man Sentenced to three Months for ... - Morocco World News

By Jamal Saidi

Morocco World News

Casablanca, August 27, 2012

Last Friday, A court in Rabat sentenced a young man to three months in prison and fined him 250 Dirhams after being caught red-handed, eating in a public place during the day of Ramadan.

According to Al Massae, the young man admitted throughout the phases of interrogation by the police and during the trial that he ate openly as a result of personal conviction. He stressed that eating in the fasting month of Ramadan is part of his individual freedom.

The public prosecutor, however, rejected his claim and emphasized that eating publicly in the holy month is a ?crime? which is punishable by law.

The Moroccan penal code states in its article 222 that a Muslim who breaks the fast during Ramadan publicly and without a religiously accepted reason can be imprisoned for up to six months and fined.

Morocco has recently witnessed heated debate over individual freedom such as sexual freedom and the right to eat and drink during the day in Ramadan.

Last month, a movement was founded by some young Moroccans named Massayminch or ?we are not fasting?, demanding the abolition of the aforementioned article of the penal code.

Chael Sonnen, Chris Weidman volunteered to take UFC 151 fight with Jon Jones

The UFC decided to cancel UFC 151 after Jon Jones passed on replacement opponents when Dan Henderson had to pull out because of an injury. Two of those opponents spoke up after the news broke on the UFC 151 cancellation.

Chael Sonnen started a Twitter beef with Jones last week after Sonnen announced his move up to light heavyweight. Sonnen took to Twitter again on Thursday.

Sonnen wasn't the only one to offer to step up and fight a five-round, championship fight on Sept. 1. Middleweight Chris Weidman also offered to move up a weight class and take the fight. Weidman was thought to have earned a middleweight title shot, but current champion Anderson Silva will not be fighting again before the end of the year.

Weidman saw a second chance at a title and and called UFC matchmaker Joe Silva.

"I heard that Dan Henderson was hurt," Weidman said to MMA Fighting. "I said, 'Wow, I'm not getting the shot at 185, let me get Jon Jones, he's freaking awesome."

Instead, Jones will have an extra few weeks of preparation before a fight with Lyoto Machida at UFC 152.

PR consultant: More Harry photos may emerge soon

LONDON (AP) ? Brace yourself, Harry.

Britain's most prominent public relations guru said Friday he'd been approached by two women who want to sell their photos of Prince Harry, suggesting that the world may soon be seeing more of the unusually exposed British royal.

In comments to BBC television, Max Clifford said he had been approached by two American women who claim they were in the prince's hotel room in the U.S. last week. Clifford, a savvy operator famous for negotiating kiss-and-tell interviews, said the women were trying to sell their photographs ? but that he had turned them down.

"Two people at that party came to me and asked me, would I represent them? Would I sell their photos?" he said. "I said 'no.'"

Harry was photographed romping in the nude during a party at his Las Vegas hotel suite. The pictures ? published by celebrity gossip site TMZ earlier this week ? have caused a global stir. Many Britons have laughed off the 27-year-old prince's hijinks, but questions have been raised about the prince's publicly-funded security detail.

On Thursday, TMZ claimed that "several girls" had taken pictures at the party using their cell phones as the party got started and that "more photos were taken" after the clothes came off. Neither TMZ nor Clifford has made clear whether they believe the unreleased photographs show the prince in the nude.

Clifford has been a key player in many of Britain's biggest tabloid scandals, but said he turned the women away because he could not justify the sale to himself. British publications have largely steered clear of the photographs, with the prominent exception of Rupert Murdoch's The Sun tabloid, which became the first paper to splash the pictures across its front page on Friday with the words: "HEIR IT IS!" and marketing the grainy photograph as a "souvenir printed edition."

The paper said it had defied the wishes of the royal family because there was a public interest in knowing what the prince ? who represented the queen at the 2012 Olympic Games and is heavily involved in charity work ? got up to abroad.

Privacy lawyer Chris Hutchings said that the paper's public interest argument could have traction.

"The public interest argument is on the basis that Prince Harry represents this country around the world and the photos bring into question his suitability to act as a British ambassador," Hutchings said, although he added: "The Sun have taken a calculated risk in publishing the photos given their inherently private nature."

Elisabeth Murdoch, Murdoch's daughter, said she supported The Sun's decision.

Speaking at the International Television Festival in Edinburgh, the Scottish capital, she said she felt bad for the prince, but that the photos were already all over the Internet.

"It would be very sad if we lived in a world where we can't publish that picture," she said.
