plantmom - Sunscreens and skin cancer

One of my customers told me one day that since people have been using sunscreens more often, there has been an increase in skin cancer, not a decrease.

Why? Because, according to the FDA, a high proportion of such products have a version of Vitamin A called retinyl palmitate in them.? By the way, another version of Vitamin A is retin a, which is used to treat acne.? Any time these compounds are used, it is recommended that the user stay out of the sun.? Yup.? An ingredient frequently found in sunscreens is something you shouldn?t go out in the sun wearing.?

Another chemical found in some sunscreens is oxybenzone.? Which is described as a hormone-disrupting compound absorbed by the skin.

Why has it been possible for manufacturers to include these chemicals in what we slather on in the summer?? Because the FDA has been waffling about setting up guidelines.? Bear in mind also, for decades a common ingredient in woman?s cosmetics was formaldehyde.? Yum.? The people devising these formulas were motivated by money and indifferent to public health, ultimately. ?

So what works without screwing up your body chemistry?

Locally, I have found the alba BOTANICA group carried at Wegmans to be really good.? None of the no-nos are in any of them.? Several use minerals, such as good-oldfashioned zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, to provide protection.

Parenthetically, one of my other customers said the confusion kinda makes sense, given that when we were kids, if we got a sunburn, we?d stay out of the sun until it was healed.? These days, unless we?re careful, we?re too likely to go back outside and get another dose.? Thinking we?re protected when in fact we?re not.
