Bipolar disorder is a kind of mood disorder and is a combination of psychological and physical features that affect?s human functioning. In the past people referred to bipolar disorder as manic depression. People suffering from bipolar disorder go through mood swings that alternate between two opposite poles such as extreme sadness and euphoric happiness.
Causes of Bipolar Disorder:
Multiple factors are responsible for the cause of bipolar disorder. Chemicals called neurotransmitters control the functions of the brain and any imbalance in any of these neurotransmitters, mainly the norepinephrine, may lead to bipolar disorder. When norepinephrine levels are below normal, a person is said to experience depression and when the norepinephrine levels shoot up, a person experiences mania. Serotonin and dopamine are also norepinephrines that are believed to be responsible for bipolar disorder. The genetic component too plays a significant role and any family member with bipolar disorder can put other members at risk. Identical twin of a person suffering from bipolar disorder is at the highest risk for contracting the disease. However, genes alone are not responsible for the disease. Stress of any kind is required to trigger the onset of bipolar disorder. Environmental and genetic factors are the main reasons for bipolar disorder.
Drug abuse, emotional stress and illness are few other conditions that can trigger the onset of bipolar disorder.

Poor performance, inappropriate behavior and mood states are psychological in nature and are some of the symptoms that are examined during the psychological assessment.
Although there is no cure for bipolar disorder, with appropriate therapies and medical treatment, people with bipolar disorder can still lead normal and productive lives. Counseling and medications to control mood swings are primary types of bipolar disorder treatment.
