HIGH POINT--Shamrock Golf Course in Burlington closed in 2011. But, people in the neighborhood took it over and plan to reopen it in time for a traditional golf tournament next month.
There is a lot of landscaping left to do.
"Everybody brings their weed eaters, their blowers their lawnmowers," Shamrock Golf Alliance Board Member Scott Robertson said.
After sitting idle for nearly two years, people in the Shamrock Community decided to take over management of the golf course.
"A lot of sweat equity. A ton of volunteers. These guys and ladies have come out to paint the tee markers and poles," Golf Alliance President Jon Harris said.
Now they hope to re-open the course next month.
"People make friendship, relationships and business deals on a golf course," Harris said. "But when you live on a golf course and you come by and see the natural beauty, and the changing seasons and you see the constant work that the employees staff and volunteers put into that course, there's a sense of satisfaction."
"The neighbors here did not want to see it go away. One of the main reasons is the Alamance County Parent-Child Golf Tournament which has run consecutively for thirty years," Robertson said.
It opened in 1957 as the first public golf course in Burlington and has hosted that tournament every year since 1981, until it closed in 2011.
?It's just a great way to bond. Our children are our future," Robertson said about the importance of the tournament to the community.
Thanks to their efforts, it'll be back in September with a few improvements to the course.
"We have a big commitment with championship turf systems out of Texas. They did Sedgefield...If It's good enough for Sedgefield we feel like it's good enough for shamrock," Harris said about the courses new greens.
He hopes to have a ceremonious shot off the first tee during it's grand re-opening.
"We'd like for that first swing to be able to be made by a child because that's where we want to put our emphasis back on youth, golf and development," Harris said.
Developing our youth after re-developing an old Burlington tradition.
They plan to open the course on September 6th and the Alamance Parent-Child Golf Tournament will take place September 20-22. If you are interested in signing up for the tournament, e-mail shamrockgolfcourse@gmail.com
