Diane Ravitch: 3 Dubious Uses of Technology in Schools

Image: DAVID DESPAU

Technology is transforming American education, for good and for ill. The good comes from the ingenious ways that teachers encourage their students to engage in science projects, learn about history by seeing the events for themselves and explore their own ideas on the Internet. There are literally thousands of Internet-savvy teachers who regularly exchange ideas about enlivening classrooms to heighten student engagement in learning.

The ill comes in many insidious forms.

One of the malign manifestations of the new technology is for-profit online charter schools, sometimes called virtual academies. These K?12 schools recruit heavily and spend many millions of taxpayer dollars on advertising. They typically collect state tuition for each student, which is removed from the local public schools' budget. They claim to offer customized, personalized education, but that's just rhetoric. They have high dropout rates, low test scores and low graduation rates. Some have annual attrition rates of 50 percent. But so long as the virtual schools keep luring new students, they are very profitable for their owners and investors.

Another dubious use of technology is to grade essays. Major testing companies such as Pearson and McGraw-Hill are using software to score written test answers. Machines can grade faster than teachers, but they cannot evaluate factual statements or the imaginative use of language. A student may write that the World War II began in 1839, and the machine won't object. Students will learn to write according to the formula that the machine likes, at the expense of accuracy, creativity and imagination. Worse, the teacher will abandon the important job of reading what his or her students write and will be less informed about how they think. That is a loss for the quality of education. Frankly, it is a problem with online assessment in general, as the job of testing is shifted from the teacher to a distant corporation; the last round of state testing saw computer breakdowns in several states. In addition, it is only a matter of time until students hack into the tests.

The most worrisome use of technology is to accumulate and store personal, confidential data about every public school student. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation put up close to $100 million to create the Shared Learning Collaborative, now called inBloom, with partners Wireless Generation (owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation) and Carnegie Corporation. It will gather student data from several districts and states, including New York, Georgia, Delaware, Kentucky and Louisiana (some of these states are reconsidering because of objections from parents). The data will be stored on a cloud managed by Amazon. On the cloud will be students' names, addresses, grades, test scores, disability status, attendance, program participation and many other details about students that teachers and schools are not allowed to release.

Who needs all this personal information, and why is it being shared? Advocates say that the goal is to create better products for individual students. Critics believe that the information will be given or sold to vendors, who will use it to market products to children and their parents. No one knows whether the data will be secure; snoops frequently hack into databases and clouds.

Until recently, the release of personal student data without parental consent would have been prohibited by a 1974 federal law known as FERPA (the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act). In 2011, however, the U.S. Department of Education revised the FERPA regulations, making this data project legal. The electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) has sued the Department of Education in federal court for watering down FERPA and allowing students' data to be released to third parties without parental consent.

Here is the conundrum: teachers see technology as a tool to inspire student learning; entrepreneurs see it as a way to standardize teaching, to replace teachers, to make money and to market new products. Which vision will prevail?

Taliban prison break: 250 militants escape after attack on Pakistan jail

ISLAMABAD - Suicide bombers and attackers with rocket-propelled grenades assaulted a prison in Pakistan, allowing 250 inmates - including top militants - to escape, police and Taliban sources said early Tuesday.

At least eight policemen were killed, and 21 people - including civilians - were injured in the attack, which began shortly before midnight local time (3 p.m. ET) Monday.?

Fighting and explosions could still be heard into the early hours of Tuesday, and security forces had imposed a curfew in order to protect civilians in the city of Dera Ismail Khan, Shaukat Yousafzai, a spokesperson for Khyber Pakhtunkwa province told NBC News.

The number of militants, if any, that escaped was unclear and could not be independently verified.

The Pakistani Taliban claimed it had released 250 prisoners during the attack on the jail complex in the mid-sized frontier town, 200 miles west of Lahore, which borders the volatile South Waziristan tribal area.

Mushtaq Jadoon, the local civil commissioner, told Reuters the escaped prisoners included 30 top militants and six people on death row. Those who escaped are believed to have been whisked away to the lawless tribal areas of South and North Waziristan.

Yousafzai said militants dressed in police uniform attacked the heavily-guarded prison but were repelled. More than 3,000 inmates are held at the prison.

"We received eight bullet-riddled bodies of policemen and 21 injured so far," said?Dr Rab Nawaz, a doctor at Dera Ismail Khan's main hospital, adding that some of the injured were in a critical condition.

Pakistan Taliban spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said that, soon after entering the prison, the attackers destroyed a power supply system of the jail and started calling names of known prisoners through loud speakers to escape.

"Major part of our operation is over and we succeeded in freeing our 250 prisoners from the jail. This was our aim but our suicide bombers are still present inside the jail and offering tough resistance to the military forces and police to enter the prison," he said.

He claimed they had planned the attacks a few months ago to release their "important" senior leaders from the jail.

Provincial prisons chief Khalid Abbas told Reuters that there were up to 40 gunmen wearing police uniforms who launched the attack, destroyed a power line and detonated heavy explosions that breached the outer walls.?

"It's completely dark in there. We don't know what's going on but there is fighting," he said.

The militants fought their way inside using rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns, district police chief Sohail Khalid told Reuters.

A senior security official in Peshawar said militants were planning a "Bannu" like attack on the jail to release prisoners. A high profile jail break occurred in 2012 in nearby Bannu, where several Taliban and other militants, including those involved in assassination attempts on former president Pervez Musharraf, were freed.

Jeff Black of NBC News and Reuters contributed to this report.

'Cory will forever be in my heart' Lea Michele thanks fans for their suppport via Twitter

The 26-year-old star, who has not been seen in public since Cory passed away on July 13, shared a message as well as a personal photo of them together on her Twitter and Instagram pages.

"Thank you all for helping me through this time with your enormous love & support. Cory will forever be in my heart," she wrote alongside the intimate snap which shows Lea cuddling up to Cory in a beach as they grin for the camera.

It has obviously been a very difficult time for the brunette, who has been spending a lot of time with Cory's mother after helping to organise his funeral.

Lea has also been seeking solace in her grief from her fellow Glee cast and joined them for a memorial service last week "to share memories and music in an emotional celebration of the life of Cory," according to a statement.

Cory, who played Finn Hudson in Glee, was found dead in his hotel room in Vancouver earlier this month.

Results later showed that he had died from a heroin and alcohol overdose - despite having been in rehab earlier on in the year.

DTM commented on Waqar Hassan's blog post 'Apple Accepts That Developer Site Was Hacked'

Apple is renowned for its unique and innovative products, such as the iPhone, iPod and iPad and its Mac computers. The company also develops computer software and is regarded as the second largest information technology company of the world. Apple rose to popularity after it launched the first iPhone in 2007, which gave rise to the smartphone market. Since then, the company has garnered a huge share in the market and its products are highly coveted. It retains the position of the third largest cell phone maker.

In the latest news regarding the company, its developer site has become unavailable for software engineers because a hacker had attempted to steal personal information from there. This was revealed by the company itself. The website was taken offline by the company on July 18th. This particular website is used by programmers for writing applications for Macs, iPhones and other products of the Cupertino based firm. The company posted a statement on the internet, in which it announced that the site had been taken offline to fix the issue.

Delays could be faced by developers who utilize the website for documentation, engineering information and software downloads in order to introduce their own products. Some of the information that?s stored on the website remains encrypted. However, the company hasn?t been able to determine as yet whether mailing addresses, names or email addresses may have been accessed by the hacker. App developer Kwestr, which is based in Beijing, commented on the issue. Its chief executive officer, Frank Yu said that for developers it could be a serious loss of trust as the partners have been breached in a hacking attempt. For keeping these fears at bay, Apple has given a good response.

The company said that for those users whose accounts were about to expire during the days the website is offline, it would extend the membership. The iPhone maker also stated that it was doing a complete haul of its developer systems in order to prevent a security threat like this from occurring all over again. Cui Tong, an iOS developer based in Beijing said that this event was evidence of the fact that the personal information and the developer account of people could have been leaked. He added that he was hoping that the California based firm would be spending more resources and time on ensuring that the private information of users remains safe.

In May, the Pentagon had approved the devices of Apple Inc. for use on its own networks. This had been approval for the use of government-issued products of Apple that were based on the iOS 6 mobile platform. In regard to military sales, some products of BlackBerry and Samsung have also received approval. The iPhone maker had declared at that time that this approval boasted the company?s commitment to provide a secure platform for both enterprise and government users of the devices.

Chinese scalpers booking & selling Apple Store Genius Bar appointments online

Chinese scalpers have set their sights on a new, in-demand product with limited availability: Genius Bar appointments inside Apple's popular retail stores.

Local ticket scalpers are online in Beijing charging between 10 and 40 yuan ($1.63 to $6.52) for a Genius Bar appointment after booking up all available appointments months in advance, according to Beijing Morning News. The trend is causing trouble for some Apple product owners in the area, as getting to a store is sometimes difficult due to their work schedules. These Apple customers are then left with a difficult choice: pay the scalpers for a ticket or hope that there is a no-show and a place opens up for them in the Genius Bar queue.

"[Booking service at an Apple Store] is difficult," said one customer, "like [getting a] Spring Festival train ticket." The customer was referring to the Chunyun period, a time of extremely high traffic load in China, which typically starts 15 days before the Lunar New Year. During that period, scalpers often charge double or triple the usual price for a railway ticket.

One reporter, having failed to secure a Genius Bar appointment through the normal routes, looked into advertisements that offered up slots at the city's Apple Stores. Within minutes, the scalpers had presented a choice of two local stores and two time slots. After receiving login details for the booking from the scalpers, the reporter was able to access the appointment on Apple's site in order to change the details to his own, ensuring there would be no problems with the newly acquired time slot.

The reporter contacted the manager of the Apple retail outlet, relaying the process he'd just gone through and asking whether the store or Apple would be doing anything to squash the network of scalpers. At the time of the writing of the story, there had been no response.

Apple's retail outlets are high traffic locations ? welcoming 120 million visitors in the last quarter of 2012 ? and this is even more so in the world's most populous nation. One Beijing location, according to the report, sees hundreds of Genius Bar reservations made per day, and appointments for iPhone and iPad maintenance stay in short supply in the city.

Responding to the Beijing Morning Times story, some observers have noted that low appointment availability is something of a regularity in Hong Kong. Reportedly two out of three Apple Stores there regularly have no appointments available.

So I played the Phase 3 of the Final Fantasy XIV beta a little while back and absolutely loved it. Was never really much of an MMO kind of gamer first off. Never really got into WoW (got to maybe level 20 and quit) And I gave Final Fantasy XI a chance (twice), perhaps the most I've ever contributed to an MMORPG was Star Wars the Old Republic. That said Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn is by far the coolest, exciting, gamer friendly MMO I've ever played.
The visuals are amazing, the quest are enjoyable, and the crafting is like a fun little mini game. Anyway I guess I'm saying all this cause I am so excited for this game launching next month that I've preordered it to get on the game immediately after the final beta next month (which anybody can join), and if any of you are interested would love to quest with you all. Anyway hit me up if you consider joining the FFXIV experience.

Egypt's military and Muslim Brotherhood in violent showdown (+video)

Egypt's health ministry says at least 65 are dead in violent clashes Saturday between security forces and supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi. The violence indicates a willingness by police to use firepower against any expansion of Islamist-led protests.

Security forces clashed with supporters of Egypt's ousted president early Saturday, killing at least 65 protesters, the Health Ministry said, in the country's bloodiest incidence of violence since the military deposed Mohammed Morsi.

At a makeshift hospital near the site of the battles in eastern Cairo, doctors struggled to cope with the flood of dozens of wounded.

The extent of the carnage underlined the willingness of police to unleash deadly firepower against any expansion of Islamist-led protests demanding the reinstatement of Morsi. Military-backed authorities are feeling emboldened after millions turned out for nationwide rallies Friday called by the army chief in support of a tough hand against what he called "terrorism."

Interim Vice President Mohamed ElBaradei, a longtime pro-democracy campaigner who backed the military's ouster of Morsi, raised one of the few notes of criticism of the bloodshed in the new military-backed leadership.

"I highly condemn the excessive use of force and the fall of victims," he wrote in a tweet, though he did not directly place blame for the use of force. He added that he is "working very hard and in all directions to end this confrontation in a peaceful manner."

The bloodshed also pointed to the Islamists' readiness to challenge the security forces as Morsi's supporters try to win over public support for their cause.

The fighting, which began before dawn and stretched out over several hours, was the deadliest bouts of violence since the military ousted Morsi on July 3 in the wake of massive protests demanding his removal. Soon after Morsi's fall, more than 50 of his supporters were killed in a similar outbreak of violence outside a headquarters of the Republican Guard.

A leading figure of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, Mohammed el-Beltagy, blamed the violence on army chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi's call for rallies on Friday.

"This is the mandate el-Sissi took last night ? to commit massacres and bloodshed against peaceful protesters denouncing the military coup," el-Beltagy said in a statement on his Facebook page.

The clashes began after a crowd of Morsi supporters late Friday moved out of their main sit-in camp where they have been located for nearly three weeks, in front of the Rabaah al-Adawiyah Mosque.

Some of them installed themselves on a nearby major boulevard, blocking traffic. They began to set up tents there, planning to stay there at least three days, said Mahmoud Zaqzouq, a Brotherhood spokesman. Others went up on a nearby highway overpass, he told The Associated Press.

Police moved in and fired tear gas to break up the crowds at around 2 a.m., and protesters responded with volleys of stones in battles near a memorial to former President Anwar Sadat, who was assassinated in 1981.

Gunshots also rang out, seemingly from both sides, said one witness, Mosa'ab Elshamy, a freelance photographer, though he could not tell who started firing.

Armed residents of the area also joined the police side, and there were also plainclothes police carrying handguns, he said. The security forces "felt a bit more unrestrained than other times," said Elshamy, who has extensively covered other clashes with police the past two years. "It was clear they had no restraints."

Ragab Nayel Ali, one of the pro-Morsi protesters, said security forces fired first with tear gas and birdshot. "Protesters replied by hurling rocks and started building walls," said Ali, who was injured in an accident as he ferried wounded on his motorcycle from the fighting to a field hospital.

At the makeshift clinic set up at the Rabaah al-Adawiya encampment, men shouted "God is great," and women wailed as bodies were loaded into ambulances to be taken for examination at hospitals. Bodies of more than a dozen men lay on the blood-splattered floor with white sheets over them.

"They aimed at killing the people. They aimed the head and the neck," said Ahmed Abdullah, a doctor at the field clinic, as he wiped tears from his eyes.

A medical official at a nearby hospital said many of those killed had bullet wounds at chest level or higher. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the press.

Health Ministry spokesman Khaled el-Khateeb said that at least 65 people were killed in the violence. Nine more were killed in clashes in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria since Friday, he said. Nationwide, nearly 750 people were wounded in various incidents of violence, 270 of them in the Cairo bloodshed, he said.

A Brotherhood spokesman, Ahmed Aref, told reporters that 66 were killed in the Cairo violence and another 61 were "clinically dead." He did not further explain their condition, but his comments suggested the official toll could go higher.

The Interior Ministry, which oversees the police force, said in a statement that residents in the district began clashing with the pro-Morsi marchers when their protest blocked a major artery. The ministry said police who intervened were trying to break up the two sides by firing tear gas.

Amr Moussa, a former Arab League chief and presidential candidate who lost to Morsi last year, called on the government to make clear what happened.

"Yesterday, masses went out to the streets against terrorism, violence and bloodshed. Do not forget that," the secular-leaning Moussa said in a statement.

Interior Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Hani Abdel-Latif said 14 policemen and 37 army troops were wounded in the violence. He said that two of the policemen had gunshot wounds to the head. He claimed that the police only used tear gas against the protesters.

He warned against "following calls for non-peaceful protests."

It was not clear how troops could have been wounded in the fighting, since the army did not appear to be involved in the fighting. Elshamy said troops' only involvement he saw was that some fired into the air at one point, causing both police and protesters to back up for a short time.

Interim President Adly Mansour told the private TV station al-Hayat that his government seeks to include everyone, but it will not accept lawlessness, blocked roads and attacks on state institutions.

"I can't negotiate with anyone who has committed a crime. But those who were duped or those who want to belong to Egyptian society, we welcome them," he said. But he added: "The state must interfere (against lawlessness) firmly."

The violence is certain to only further deepen the divides over the military coup that ended Morsi's one year in office. Millions joined four days of protests that began June 30 demanding Morsi be removed, accusing him of empowering his Brotherhood and failing to resolve the country's problems.

Many of Morsi's opponents, including liberals, leftists and moderate Muslim, secular and Christian Egyptians, have now enthusiastically embraced the military after el-Sissi's removal of Morsi. The military-backed interim leadership has pushed a fast-track transition plan to return to a democratically elected government by early next year.

Morsi's supporters, meanwhile, reject the new political order, and say the military illegally ousted the country's first democratically elected leader. They have kept up their sit-in and held near daily rallies elsewhere in the capital to demand Morsi be reinstated.

While the main sit-in has been peaceful, protests elsewhere have repeatedly turned violent, and some 180 people have been killed in clashes nationwide. Each side has accused the other of sparking clashes.

El-Sissi called for Friday's mass rallies to give the military a mandate to fight "violence and terrorism," raising speculation that he may be planning a crackdown against the pro-Morsi rallies.

Giant crowds responded to his call Friday, packing main squares in cities around the country, voicing support for a tough hand against Islamists. Morsi supporters also held large rallies Friday, although smaller than those of the pro-military camp.

The rival demonstrations erupted into violence in the Mediterranean coastal city of Alexandria that left eight dead.

More than 100 Morsi supporters had taken refuge in a central mosque in Alexandria, and held 17 of their rivals hostage overnight inside to try and fend off a security siege of the building. A security official said the hostages were freed and those inside the mosque arrested. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media

Also on Friday, authorities announced that Morsi was formally placed under investigation on a host of allegations including murder and conspiracy with the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Morsi has been held incommunicado since being taken into military custody on July 3.
