Exploring Los Angeles: The Peterson Automotive Museum

Do you love classic cars and motorcycles? If so, your knowledge wouldn?t be complete without a visit to the Petersen Automotive Museum which features over 300,000 square feet of classic cars, motorcycles and trucks. Spanning four floors, there?s something for everyone to enjoy at this museum, even the kids. Let?s take a closer look at exploring the Petersen Automotive Museum and all that you?ll see while there.

About the Museum

The museum was a dream of the Petersen family who donated over $30 million to make their dream a reality. With over 300,000 square feet of exhibit space and four floors to showcase in, the museum is best known for it?s life-size dioramas, which feature 150 cars, trucks and motorcycles. However, as mentioned above, the museum is welcoming of people of all ages, even children who will feel right at home in the May Family Discovery Center.

Exhibits within the Museum

On the first floor, visitors will find permanent exhibits, but what makes the museum interesting is that visitors aren?t kept behind a velvet rope, but encouraged to walk through the exhibits, which are large dioramas that give a feel of what the automotive industry use to be like. The second floor of the museum is home to five rotating galleries that feature everything from classic cars to concept cars to famous movie cars. The third floor is where the kids, and some adults, will have fun with the interactive, hands-on exhibits. Children will learn the basics of how a car functions in this 6,500 square foot space. The last floor is a glass penthouse that is reserved for business meetings, functions and conferences.

Tickets and Prices

Located at 6060 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles, the Petersen Automotive Museum is open Tuesday-Sunday 10AM to 6PM and the May Family Discovery Center is open 10AM to 4PM. The museum is closed on Mondays. Ticket prices are as follows with adult tickets costing $10, seniors $8, children (5-12) $5 and children under 5 are free. The museum also offers tours for groups, schools and car and motorcycle clubs which last 2 hours.

The Petersen Automotive Museum is a must for anyone that loves cars or motorcycles. When visiting Los Angles be sure to stop by and see the exhibits. After all, some movie cars are more famous than the stars that drove them. Best of all, this is an attraction that is not only fun and educational, but affordable as well.
