China says 14 extremists killed in Xinjiang attack (AP)

BEIJING ? Ethnic religious extremists armed with homemade weapons attacked a police station in China's restive far west earlier this week in a planned siege that ended with 14 of the 18 attackers dead, China said Wednesday in a new detailed account of the violence.

State media variously have blamed terrorists, rioters or thugs for Monday's violence in the Xinjiang region. An exile group that advocates for greater Uighur autonomy instead has said a peaceful protest turned into a bloody clash between police and demonstrators.

Xinjiang has been beset by ethnic conflict and a sometimes-violent separatist movement by Uighurs (pronounced WEE'-gurs), a largely Muslim ethnic group that sees Xinjiang as its homeland. Many Uighurs resent the Han Chinese majority as interlopers.

A group of "religious extremists" opposed to the Chinese government arrived two days earlier in Hotan and organized the terror attack in the city, a Xinjiang regional government spokeswoman told The Associated Press.

"They arrived in groups on the 16th with several dozen different knives including cleavers, axes and switchblades," the spokeswoman, Hou Hanmin, said. "They also went to a local market to buy other knives and materials to make molotov cocktails and homemade bombs."

The men first stabbed a Uighur security guard at the gate of the police station before storming inside. They later took several hostages, including two female Han Chinese who were stabbed to death. A Han Chinese paramilitary officer was killed by a bomb the attackers set off, she said.

Four other hostages, all Uighur, were also injured, she said.

"The attack was not about ethnicity," Hou said, "They were charging into the police station to oppose the government and create violence."

Hou said the men took down a Chinese flag at the station and raised a black flag with Arabic writing on it but she couldn't say what the writing meant. They were "shouting slogans like 'Sacred War' and 'Allah,'" she said.

Hou said, however, the flag did not resemble ones used by the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, or ETIM, a banned organization advocating independence for Xinjiang. China says that group is allied with al-Qaida.

China has said an ETIM cell was behind a pair of deadly attacks aimed at disrupting the 2008 Beijing Olympics that reportedly killed 29 people, including 10 attackers.

Police shot to death 14 of the men and four were detained, Hou said, adding an investigation was continuing into Monday's violence.

Earlier English-language reports by the official Xinhua News Agency referred to the men as rioters or thugs and did not mention terrorism. The earlier state media accounts did not describe the attack in detail or say how many assailants had been involved.

A Germany-based Uighur exile group, the World Uyghur Congress, based its account of the violence on anonymous Uighur sources in Xinjiang. The group said in an emailed statement that the violence erupted when more than 100 Uighurs gathered to protest a police crackdown in the city. Demonstrators were demanding to know the status of missing relatives they believe were in police custody, the group said.

It said the protest turned into a clash and police opened fire. WUC spokesman Dilxat Raxit said by telephone Wednesday that 20 Uighurs were killed and 12 injured, including 3 in critical condition. He also demanded an independent investigation into the violence.

Hou called the group's account "utter nonsense."

"There was no so-called peaceful protest at all," she said.

Obtaining independent information from Xinjiang is difficult because government controls on the local population are tight and people fear speaking out may get them into trouble.

Two years ago in Xinjiang's regional capital of Urumqi, simmering tensions erupted in the region's worst ethnic violence in more than a decade. Uighurs attacked Han Chinese, overturning buses and cars and torching shops in a riot the government says killed 197 people, mostly Hans. In the aftermath, hundreds were arrested in a region-wide crackdown and about two dozen sentenced to death. Many other Uighurs remain unaccounted for and are believed to be in custody.

Feds in dark about some drinking water problems (AP)

WASHINGTON ? When contaminants in a public water system exceed safe drinking water standards, federal environmental officials may not know about it.

An investigation requested by Congress and released Tuesday found that 14 states failed to tell ? or inaccurately reported ? hundreds of violations at public water systems to the Environmental Protection Agency in 2009. Those states also misreported most violations of monitoring requirements.

While states are the first line of defense on drinking water safety, the EPA relies on their data to determine when to step in and protect public health.

Three House Democrats said Tuesday that the results show the EPA needs money to improve drinking water protection. In 2009, EPA stopped auditing reporting of violations because of budget constraints.

House Republicans are proposing to slash EPA's budget.

broken record: Comic Book Review: The Filipino Heroes League, Book ...

So this ?Paolo Fabregas? guy who supposedly wrote and drew it was apparently THE Paolo Fabregas. Brother of hottie Lara, and son of cool actor guy Jaime. But we?re here to talk about the book? (of course, if this was at least 16 years ago, we might be talking about Lara? the blogging hadn?t been really done yet back then? but I digress?)

??? ? ?

?????I was skeptic, to say the least, but the whole ?third world superhero? thing sort of got me. That, and the image of masked men running into action on a pedicab. At least the image on the back cover told me quite clearly that whoever did this book doesn?t take itself too seriously (unlike the people who put together stuff for the two aforementioned books. More on them some other time).

?The story follows the adventures of the titular super team, who, at the point of the book?s supposed writing, are little more than a shell of its former glory. They are a typical government agency who are underfunded, undermanned, and somewhat a joke. Naturally, there are plotholes all over the thing, but the good intentions and self-deprecation more than makes up for those. The involvement of the government, politics, and the media make the story very, very Pinoy.

The characters are quite promising and might have interesting back stories if this series finds itself a willing investor, or even sponsors. The core of the team are: ?Kidlat Kid,? the team?s resident speedster and joker. Easily the writer?s favorite. ?Flashlight,? the current leader, and the only one of the ?old heroes? that remains, is a chain-smoking womanizer. ?Invisiboy,? the good-hearted dimwit/stiff, who can predictably enough, turn invisible.

The good: it doesn?t take itself too seriously, and the dialogue isn?t hokey. The English is pretty much free of glaring grammatical errors such as those I found on ?Underpass? and the ?Anthology.? The characters could use some work, but the personality mix isn?t bad. Oh, and I would have probably gotten more of the ?third world? feel if there was more ?salitang kanto? peppered into the book. The Philippines is a bilingual country, so I would personally predict that this book could have been more effective if this was also bilingual. Perhaps a bilingual edition is in order for the local kids? Just a suggestion.

Paolo Fabregas could have gotten some help to come up with a more amusing set of powers, but chose to keep it simple enough for the hopefully supportive third-world reader. Good move. The subtle humor is also distinctively Pinoy, but understandable enough for any reader.

The story was amusing enough to keep me reading until I finished the book in a day and a half, which is more than what I can say for other local comics.

The bad: The art wasn?t ?bad,? but given the world-renowned talent of Pinoys in the art field, this could have been better. With all due respect to Fabregas, the storytelling was effective, but the faces and body language were inconsistent. My non-professional advice to Fabregas: you have a strong concept, bro. Write it, pencil in some breakdowns, and find someone else to finish up the art.

The book should also have been published in the typical comic book size to give it a better comic book feel. But that?s trivial.

The verdict: if this book gets more support, then it might have legs, and even a real life. With local pulp comic serials virtually gone, there is a void that needs to be filled in the local literary world. Best of all, this book wasn?t trying hard to be smart, clever, preachy, or even artsy. It simply had a concept, and carried it through into an entertaining enough story. Yes, it was far from perfect, but it was actually fun.

At only two hundred bucks, it was worth a try, and honestly wasn?t a waste.

Hell, I?d buy the next chapter right now if it was out. You should, too. But buy this one first.

?catch you later.

Clinton: US backs tough Greek austerity measures (AP)

ATHENS, Greece ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton voiced strong American support Sunday for financially troubled Greece's economic recovery plans and urged the nation to forge ahead with painful reforms that have sparked unrest.

During and after meetings with senior Greek officials, Clinton underscored Washington's backing for their deficit and debt reduction programs that have hit the country hard, even as the Obama administration grapples with a similar issue at home. She acknowledged the reforms were "strong medicine" that are difficult to swallow, but said the United States had complete confidence in them.

"America is just as committed to Greece's future as we are to preserving your past," Clinton said before signing an agreement at the Acropolis Museum that will protect Greek cultural objects from being looted or illegally sold on the international market. "During these difficult economic times, we will stand with you."

Standing before a bank of large windows looking up at the Acropolis, she said: "We are confident that the nation that built the Parthenon, invented democracy and inspired the world can rise to the current challenge."

Earlier, at a news conference with Greek Foreign Minister Stavros Lambrinidis, Clinton said the U.S. and Greece "have a lot riding on our relationship together." Lambrinidis thanked her for U.S. support. "Friends prove themselves in difficult times and, as we know, Greece is going through a difficult time," he said. "The U.S. has stood by us in a decisive manner."

Lambrindis said that many on "both sides of the Atlantic" had predicted Greece's collapse. He said Greece had proved them wrong and would continue to prove them wrong.

The Greek financial crisis loomed overshadowed other items on Clinton's agenda here, including improving ties between Greece and Turkey, resolving their long-standing dispute over divided Cyprus, the Middle East peace process and the wave of popular discontent sweeping the Arab world.

Greece's government has embarked on a punishing new round of austerity measures after missing its deficit-cutting targets so far in 2011. Spending cuts and tax hikes have already sparked frequent strikes and demonstrations, with protests often turning violent in central Athens.

Clinton appealed for the Greek people to stay the course.

"We know these were not easy decisions," she said. "While the payoff from these sacrifices may not come quickly, it will come. ... Greece has inspired the world before and I have every confidence that they are doing so again."

Clinton's meetings with top Greek officials come as Greece prepares for an emergency summit on Thursday in Brussels of the leaders of the 17 eurozone countries at which they will attempt to forge a deal on a second bailout for the nation.

Greece needs an extra $162.68 billion (euro115 billion) to keep it afloat until mid-2014, according to the European Commission ? on top of a euro110 billion bailout it was granted last May.

Fears that Greece's private creditors may have to take losses as part of the deal dragged the big economies of Spain and Italy into the debt crisis, which has so far been confined to small states like Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

Clinton is visiting Athens on the second leg of a 12-day around-the-world diplomatic tour. She came to Greece from Turkey and will travel to India, Indonesia, Hong Kong and southern mainland China before returning home on July 25.

McConnell signs on to Cut, Cap, Balance Act (Daily Caller)

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has signed on to co-sponsor the Cut, Cap, Balance Act, The Daily Caller has learned.

A group of Republican Senators introduced the legislation last week. The bill is the legislative embodiment of the Cut, Cap and Balance Pledge that began floating through the halls of Capitol Hill last month. It seeks to tie a vote on the debt limit to spending cuts and caps, and the passage of a balanced budget amendment.

The bill now has 32 co-sponsors in the Senate, including Sens. Mike Lee of Utah, Jim DeMint of South Carolina, and Rand Paul of Kentucky. No Democrat has signed on yet.

In the beginning, those pushing the pledge were skeptical that Republican leadership would sign on. McConnell, in fact, never signed the pledge itself. The Cut, Cap, Balance Act, at the time, represented a clear divide between the GOP establishment and freshmen and ?Tea Party? members of Congress. (McConnell proposal on debt limit prompts swift backlash from conservatives)

Earlier this week, McConnell drew the ire of many conservatives by proposal a contingency plan if a deal on the debt limit is not reached. McConnell?s plan give to President Obama the authority to demand an increase to the debt ceiling unless Congress votes to block the request.

Dana Joy Altman: Interview With Jennifer Olvera, Author of The Food Lovers Guide to Chicago

2011-07-15-FoodLoversHighResCover.jpg

Longtime Chicago food writer Jennifer Olvera has written perhaps the most up-to-date and comprehensive guide to the Chicago food scene ever written. Entitled the Food Lovers Guide to Chicago, it's a valuable resource for locals and visitors alike with its vast coverage of the city's diverse culinary destinations. The mouth-watering content includes food trucks, festivals, butchers, ethnic markets, restaurants, distilleries, cooking classes, local food artisans and farmers and it fits as nicely on your book shelf as it will in your glove box.

I spoke with her recently about the making of the book and her own personal haunts in Chicago.

It's interesting that a book this comprehensive on the Chicago food scene hasn't really been done before. Or has it? Did you see this gaping hole and just decide to fill it?

I've covered dining and food for quite some time, and I found it surprising that nothing comprehensive was written, given what a food city this is. I wanted to embody the spirit of Chicago food as a whole, to cover destinations that both chefs and residents are passionate about. But I also wanted it to unearth the things I'd want to learn about if I was coming to Chicago for the first time.

How long have you been in Chicago? I know you've been writing about the Chicago food scene for a while now. How have you seen it change and what do you attribute those changes to?

I'm a native Chicagoan and grew up in the West Suburbs. I've seen the scene change a great deal over the years. A shared interest in food and dining, like sports, has become a common denominator. There was a time when dining out was a special occasion, grownup affair. Now, diners by the thousands, and across generations, are signing up for ticketed dining or queuing up for doughnuts simply because it's hip. Food is more accessible, exciting and varied than ever.

Do you get a sense of any new food trends starting to take shape in Chicago? What do you see coming down the pike?

Heirloom produce and heritage breed meat is becoming more readily available. In kind, artisanal butcher shops and specialty stores are providing a personal, quality experience.

And local food is more accessible, thanks to forward-thinking farms, some of which offer community-supported agriculture (CSA) programs. Given some farms are producing year-round or growing three seasons of the year, you can get your hands on unusual, locally grown produce and humanely raised meat whatever the weather.

But I think more enthusiasts than ever are choosing to grown and can their own food. There's something satisfying about being self-sufficient, of bringing food to fruition. Plenty of people are foraging for ingredients as well, including mushrooms in urban areas.

I love that local, seasonal and artisanal gets a lot of play in your book as do some pretty obscure specialty food markets and eateries that I have never heard of and I am a native Chicagoan! What were some of your favorite finds during this process? What really stood out for you personally?

Going to unfamiliar markets and eateries is exciting. Though it can be intimidating as well, there's a thrill in the hunt.

Restaurant-wise, I'm especially fond of Taqueria Ricardo in the Hermosa neighborhood. You'd never know it's tucked into a non-descript Mexican grocer and serves best-ever tacos al pastor. I also like seeking out noodles from Pasta Fresh and subs and homespun dishes from corner store Freddy's Pizza in Cicero. Some things, like these, are completely worth a detour.

What stands out to me are unpretentious, honest places -- spots that skip the fuss in favor of amazing flavors.

I also love the list of culinary instruction around the city...

Food, dining and cooking aren't mutually exclusive -- or at least they don't have to be. It made sense to include places where readers could test skills -- or begin building them.

There's nothing more empowering than making a meal and seeing the pleasure it brings others. Unfortunately, those who don't know their way around the kitchen tend to think cooking is hard. Really, once you have a foundation, it's not hard at all. It becomes intuitive and can even be meditative.

I'm curious to know, when you travel, what sources do you consult to get your information to find the best local restaurants, food shops and experiences?

More often than not, it's turning to locals that yields the best results. There are so many indigenous foods that never make it into guides. But those are the things I want to know about. When I arrive at a new place, I usually head straight for the public market or a roadside stand. Through personal experience, I've learned what's most popular is rarely what's best. More often, the most memorable recommendations come from vendors, shopkeepers and every day residents. Usually, they're more than willing to divulge places they can't live without, so I've learned to strike up a conversation or ask for advice.

That's great advice, Jennifer. OK, so that begs the question: What are your own personal haunts for shopping and eating in Chicago?

It's nothing fancy, but there's a multi-cultural produce market down the street from me that prepares food in house. If I time things right, I can pick up ultra-lemony Greek potatoes, flaky spinach pies, best-ever refried beans and chile rellenos in one fell swoop, while they're still piping hot.

I love going to Pho 777 on Argyle Street or Double Li in Chinatown for breakfast on the weekends. I also like to make my way to weird, old-timey places, like the original White Fence Farm.

As for shopping, I'm a big fan of Whole Grain Fresh Market in Westmont. I spent years developing recipes for a manga magazine. That involved a lot of trial and error and, sometimes, working with unfamiliar ingredients. I love wandering the aisles and even just looking at labels. Then, toying with new ingredients at home is the best.

So I understand the book is doing incredibly well on Amazon! Can you share the stats on that?

It's been among the top five U.S. and Midwest travel new releases and in the top 50 cooking, food and wine new releases on Amazon.com since it came out, which is great.

I know the food scene changes so frequently, will you be doing an updated version of the Guide on any regular basis?

The plan is to do future editions every two years. In the meantime, there is so much relevant, timeless information inside.

This was a huge accomplishment, what's next for you?

I'm just wrapping up my second book, Select Chicago for London-based Insight Guides. It's a breezy read on the city's little known and loved spots. Beyond that, I'm writing for the same outlets I have all along and am looking forward to culinary adventures here and abroad.

The Food Lovers Guide to Chicago can be purchased on Amazon.com and at many specialty food shops throughout Chicago.

Interview with Larry Writer ? author of Underbelly Razor ...

MD of Boomerang Books, Clayton Wehner recently caught up with biographer Larry Writer to talk about the impending Underbelly Razor TV series, which is based on Writer?s 2001 book, Razor. ?A new TV tie-in edition of the book has been released as Underbelly Razor.

Thank you very much Larry, for the opportunity to speak with you about the upcoming release of Underbelly Razor. ?The book Razor was first released in 2001 and it has now been ?rebranded? and re-released as ?Underbelly Razor? to coincide with the new 13-part Underbelly series on Channel 9. ?How is it that your work has come to be adopted as an Underbelly ?franchise??

Last year Screentime, the producers of Underbelly, approached me and said they had been looking for wonderful Australian crime stories, and that Razor was one. I was delighted because the 13-episode format of Underbelly Razor has allowed the story of Kate Leigh, Tilly Devine and the Razor Gangs between 1927-31 to be told properly with justice done to the fabulously rich characters and events that took place as well as to recreate the world of Depression-era inner Sydney where these people lived and loved and did battle.

Razor was your first foray into true crime (although you have written several crime-related books since). ?You?ve previously written biographical accounts of sportsmen and entertainers, like John Newcombe and Chrissy Amphlett ? why did you choose to delve into the world of true crime with Razor?

Rather than specialise in a genre, either sport or crime or show business, which admittedly are all passions of mine, I simply enjoy researching and writing about interesting people doing interesting things. Newc, Chrissy, Bumper Farrell, Kate and Tilly all fit the bill. I specifically chose to write Razor because I have lived most of my life in Sydney?s east, in the suburbs where the razor gangsters of the ?20s and ?30s existed, and I wanted to write about what I knew and loved. In 1997 I started doing a little research, then became entranced by the subject and three years later, after I had finished my research and interviewed many of the survivors of the era who were all in the last years of their lives, I turned all of the background I had accumulated into a book, Razor.

The Underbelly television series has been wildly popular in Australia. ?Australians seem to be fascinated by gangsters, mafioso and underworld figures ? why do you think that is so? ?Are you similarly smitten by this fascination?

Like many law-abiding people, it is a guilty pleasure to allow myself to take a vicarious interest in people who do break the law. I enjoy true and fictional crime, and love crime films. There?s nothing nicer than curling up in bed with the latest Thomas Kelly or Don Winslow novel or watching Goodfellas on the VCR. That said, I have a responsibility when writing about law breakers not to unduly glamorise them, and I have tried hard not to do this in Razor. Rather, I attempt to portray them as real people and while not being reticent about describing their crimes, if they are good parents and true friends, donate to charity or whatever I have no problem in saying so. It?s about portraying them as accurately and multi-dimensionally as I can.

I understand that you went to school in Darlinghurst and you clearly have an affinity with the eastern suburbs of Sydney where the razor gangs ruled in the 1920s and 30s. ?Today, this area of Sydney is significantly different ? what remains there today that evokes the memories of the area?s colourful past?

The inner east is vastly different today: where once there were slums and poverty there is now multi-million dollar homes, galleries and restaurants. About the worst thing to befall someone walking the lanes at night is to step in designer dog poo. But back in the ?20s the only people who lived in so-called ?Razorhurst? were the criminal or those too desperately poor to escape to the new garden suburbs. But it doesn?t take much imagination to experience the miasma of the razor gang years. Visit Kellett Street in Kings Cross, Riley Street, Kippax St, Devonshire Street. Touch the old bricks on the Strand Hotel in William Street (where Tilly Devine?s gunman Frank Green shot Kate Leigh?s men Barney Dalton and Wally Tomlinson), the East Village pub in Palmer Street which was once the notorious gangster blood house the Tradesman?s Arms. Walk through the lanes that slither around Palmer Street. You?ll get a sense of the bad old days.

Your book centres around the rival crime matriarchs Tilly Devine and Kate Leigh, who each controlled extensive prostitution, gambling, drug and sly-grog rackets. ?Both were remarkable entrepreneurs of their time, both were high profile members of society, and both were charitable in spite of their criminal activites (more so in Leigh?s case). Having studied their lives, do you have any respect for Devine and Leigh?

I have respect of a sort? only because Tilly and Kate were very good at the business they chose to be in (running brothels, and selling sly grog and cocaine, respectively) and they were more ruthless, more ambitious and much smarter than the male criminals who tried without success over the years to divest them of their empires. They were pure spirits.

The Underbelly series to date has been the work of Melbourne journalists Andrew Rule and John Silvester. ?Now that you have joined the Underbelly family, have you collaborated with Rule and Silvester? ?Has your original book been adapted in any way to meet the requirements of the Underbelly brand?

No, apart Andrew and John?s title ?Underbelly? being used in the new series, I?ve had no contact with these excellent writers. My book is a social history, the Underbelly writers have obviously created dialogue so that the characters rather than a narrator can advance the plot. Every word the actors utter, to me, rings true and is what the real life people in Razor said or would have said. The plot and events depicted are all true, as recounted in my book. The Screentime researchers went to enormous lengths to get it right. There is violence and sex in the series, as per the Underbelly template, but it would be strange if a story about gangsters and brothels didn?t have violence and sex.

Did you have an active role to play in the screenplay and is the series a true reflection of the book?

I was a consultant on the series, and my book receives a nice ?based on? credit, and I spent many hours talking to the writers and actors and directors and sound people and props people about the characters and the era and what inner Sydney was like circa 1927-31. Yes, the series is a wonderfully true depiction of the book. It?s common for writers to grizzle about what ?film makers? have done to their book, but to me everyone involved is a true professional with such respect and love for the source material. I could not be more delighted with the series.

Much of your biographical work has centred on rugby league figures ? Kevin Walters, Rex Mossop, ?Bumper? Farrell ? ?but I note that you also ghost wrote the biography for AFL coach Paul Roos and his wife Tami. ??How do you think the new Greater Western Sydney AFL team will go and will it have an impact on the dominance of rugby league in Sydney?s western suburbs?

Do I detect an AFL fan behind the question??? Well, I?m sorry but, as lovely as Paul and Tami Roos are, as a rugby league fan from childhood, who loves the game?s traditions and its role in our city?s life for a hundred years, I don?t welcome the AFL incursion, and while Australian rules has the potential to be a minor code, and a very minor code in Sydney?s west, I don?t believe that it will ever challenge rugby league in Sydney. Attendances at games, memberships at clubs and huge TV ratings back me up. That?s just the way I feel, and I?ll stand by my feelings.

Yes, you guessed right ? I am an AFL fan :) ? Can we expect more true crime offerings from Larry Writer in the future?

I have no plans to write another true crime book. I?m happy having contributed Razor and Bumper to the genre. Still, if a good story drops into my lap and I feel I can do it justice, and electricity and phone bills keep on rising?

Thank you very much for your time, Larry. ?I wish you all the best of luck with the release of Underbelly Razor.

It?s a pleasure, Clayton. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk about what I do.

Friday, July 15th, 2011 at 8:56 pm ?

Question by Sexxylexi:Where do I begin to get fit or strong as healthy ..?> Well ? if I?ve never been to a gym and never went jogging where to start. I?m thin, but not very healthy on the inside. I can not go up the stairs without breathing. I do not want to start up all these weights, but I would start with a lot of different techniques cardio. I own a bike ? that would be the best bet to start? Or should I take long walks and increase the length of time? Then there is food. Usually drink coffee always eat breakfast with occasional honey roasted peanuts, salad, a fast food restaurant, or sometimes I?ll skip. Dinner is always late around 8:00 pm. My eating habits are so because of lack of money and time. I have a daughter 2 years old, so I concentrate all my time and effort into it. I make sure they eat healthy meals. I make sure she is taken care of before anything else. When I go to the supermarket for her lame things solamente. No?m trying to form ? I really just want to be saludable.Mejor response: Reply

long walks and bike rides are a good start. It?s all about balance. Stay away from junk food, sugar and fatty foods, and try to get some exercise every day. Working to get some running, which should work fine for you. Good luck.

Bed Bugs & Pets: How to Keep Your Animals Safe & Happy | Pest Control

As America?s bed bug infestation continues to spread, families across the country wonder what it could mean for their pets.

First the good news: nature seems to be on your side. Bed bugs aren?t known to carry any diseases transmittable to mammals. Then again, studies indicate that these nasty parasites prefer the blood of humans to those of household pets. This means that the health risks to your dogs or cats are relatively low.

Nevertheless, that does not mean that your pets are immune. When humans are not an available menu option, bed bugs will feed on the blood of other mammals. They can also use pets to hitch a ride and spread to a new location.

Here are a few tips on keeping your furriest family members safe.

Prevention: The Best Defense

You can save yourself the headaches of dealing with a bed bug infestation by taking some preventative measures.

There are some pet medications that protect cats and dogs from bed bugs (in addition to the usual ticks and fleas). If your pet is currently on meds, be sure to check the label. If it does not list bed bugs among the pests it protects against, assume that it does not repel them.

This might be an important part of this study. Perhaps the best way to protect your pets is to protect your home. One of the easiest things to do? Open the curtains and windows. Bed bugs hate fresh air and sunlight, so let in as much as you can. Making your bed in the morning will also help circulate air through your sheets, as well as let you check for any signs of an infestation.

Beyond the bed, make sure to vacuum at least every 2 days, keep clothing off the floor, and tend to dirty laundry promptly and often. Most importantly, keep your dog or cat off the bed ? their fur will attract bed bugs to the mattress like a magnet.

What To Do If You Have an Infestation

Bed Bug Extermination Cost Impacts: Learn about bed bug extermination cost and the impacts this new epidemic is?

If you see bites on your pet, inspect them closely. Bed bug bites are tough to distinguish from the marks of other insects, but they?re usually small, red, and appear in a line instead of scattered. If you are not sure, check your linens (and your pet?s bedding) for small spots of blood, feces, or shed skins the bugs may have left behind. If the results are still uncertain, take your pet to a veterinarian.

If you do find hard evidence of bed bugs, gather the linens in a plastic bag for transport, and then empty the bag into your laundry machine. Wash and dry at the highest temperature setting.

It is also a good idea to call a pest control service if you suspect your home has bed bugs. A professional exterminator can provide a thorough examination of your house and take the necessary steps if you do have a problem. But when making an action plan, be sure the exterminator knows you?re a pet owner, so that no harmful pesticides or chemicals are used. Do not forget this, because bed bug extermination often requires more than one visit.

Ultimately, knowledge is your best weapon against bed bugs. Knowing what to do will save you lots of mental energy. With these tips in mind, you can keep dog tails wagging, cats purring, and safely cuddle up to your pets without worry.

Women play computer games just as much as men - and they prefer ...

By Deborah Arthurs

Last updated at 6:08 PM on 14th July 2011

It has long been dismissed as a male hobby; the preserve of computer-obsessed teenage boys and anti-social husbands everywhere.

But according to figures reported this week, there are just as many women playing online computer games as there are men.

What's more, they spend even more time glued to their screens than their male counterparts.

The study, carried out by Doritos, found that while 50 per cent of men readily admit to frequent online gaming, a surprising 49 per cent of women confess that they too are addicted to Internet games.

Virtual reality: A new study shows that almost as many women are participating in online gaming as men - with more women saying they enjoy gaming than enjoy sex

Virtual reality: A new study shows that almost as many women (49 per cent) are participating in online gaming as men (50 per cent) - with more women surveyed saying they enjoy gaming than those who admitted they enjoy sex

And while men spend 22.3 per cent of their time online playing games, women trump them, whiling away 23.2 per cent of their time online playing games.

Revealingly, the study showed that not only are women just as keen on gaming as men - but that the majority would rather spend time playing on their gadgets than having sex.

Worryingly, one in five even admitted to regularly gaming in bed. And no, that is not a euphemism.

Men may shake their heads despairingly at this - after all, all but the most devoted male computer game enthusiast would down tools for a session in the marital bed - but what is perhaps more staggering is the news that female gamers would rather play online games than go shopping.

Now that really IS an addiction.

Playing up: Women spend more time each week playing computer games than men, and cite stress relief as the main reason - but experts say such addiction could harm relationships

Playing up: Women spend more time each week playing computer games than men - but experts say such addiction could harm relationships?

It found that men are drawn to playing games by the element of competition, with more than half saying this is the main appeal, while the majority of women - two thirds - cite stress relief as the reason.

The survey also highlighted the disparity in the types of games played by the two sexes.

Women, it found, are more likely to play games with a social element or that test their brain power, with almost half the women surveyed admitting to be fans of such games compared to just a quarter of men.

So while women download apps, solve problems or exchange bushels of hay on the popular Facebook app Farmville, men, who were found to be far less selective in their gaming habits, are more likely to be shooting up virtual opponents in an online war game (over a third play regularly), or gambling, with one in five admitting to logging on to such sites.

But as this habit grows in popularity among both genders, could addiction to gaming create problems, even if the games played have a social element?

Experts say yes. Relationship experts warn that attachment to such technology could isolate us from our friends and partners, leading to problems.

Stress relief: Two thirds of women say they play games like this one to help relax, while men are drawn to games for the element of competition

Technology may be keeping us in touch with the world, but it?s also isolating us from our partners ? whether it?s a wife who spends hours on Facebook or a husband who can?t be separated from his video games.

And as reports surfaced this week that gaming habits are cited in 15 per cent of divorce cases, with women saying they feel they come second to their partners' computer games, these warnings should not fall on deaf ears.

Facebook, where many of the games women prefer are based, is cited in one in five divorces, according to lawyers, while a survey by website Divorce Online found that the phrase ?mobile phone? occurred in one in eight divorces citing unreasonable behaviour.

Even if a couple share the passion for gaming, there's no doubt that with both parties turning their focus to virtual reality, a real-life bond can be harmed.

?I call it being ?together alone?,? says relationship therapist Douglas Weiss.

?These days, people are on their mobiles at dinner; they spend hours on the computer or watching TV; and they are more connected to their Facebook friends than to the person they promised to love and cherish until death do them part.

?Technology is interrupting our relationships and allowing us to avoid each other. It has become a way of avoiding real relationships and intimacy.'
