Why Fewer Young American Jews Share Their Parents' View of Israel (Time.com)

"I'm trembling," my mother says, when I tell her I'm working on an article about how younger and older American Jews are reacting differently to the Palestinians' bid for statehood at the United Nations. I understand the frustrations of the Palestinians dealing with ongoing settlements construction and sympathize with their decision to approach the U.N., but my mom supports President Obama's promise to wield the U.S. veto, sharing his view that a two-state solution can be achieved only through negotiations with Israel.

"This is so emotional," she says as we cautiously discuss our difference of opinion. "It makes me feel absolutely terrible when you stridently voice criticisms of Israel." (See photos inside the West Bank settlements.)

A lump of guilt and sadness rises in my throat. I've written harshly of Israel's invasion of Lebanon in 2006 and its assault on Gaza in 2009, and on civil rights issues in Israel. But speaking my mind on these topics - a very Jewish thing to do - has never been easy. During my childhood in the New York suburbs, support for Israel was as fundamental a family tradition as voting Democratic or lighting the Shabbos candles on Friday night.

My mom has a masters degree in Jewish history and is the program director of a large synagogue. Her youthful Israel experiences, volunteering on a kibbutz and meeting descendants of great-grandmother's siblings, were part of my own mythology. Raised within the Conservative movement, I learned at Hebrew school that Israel was the "land of milk and honey" where Holocaust survivors had irrigated the deserts and made flowers bloom.

What I didn't hear much about was the lives of Palestinians. It was only after I went to college, met Muslim friends, and enrolled in a Middle Eastern history and politics course that I was challenged to reconcile my liberal, humanist worldview with the fact that the Jewish state of which I was so proud was occupying the land of 4.4 million stateless Palestinians, many of them refugees displaced by Israel's creation. (See TIME's photoessay on growing up Arab in Israel.)

Like many young American Jews, during my senior year of college I took the free trip to Israel offered by the Taglit-Birthright program. The bliss I felt floating in the Dead Sea, sampling succulent fruits grown by Jewish farmers, and roaming the medieval city of Safed, historic center of Kabbalah mysticism, was tempered by other experiences: Watching the construction of the imposing "security fence," which not only tamped down on terrorist attacks, but also separated Palestinian villagers from their lands and water supplies. I spent hours in hushed conversation with a young Israeli soldier who was horrified by what he said was the routinely rough and contemptuous treatment of Palestinian civilians at Israeli military checkpoints.

That trip deepened my conviction that as an American Jew, I could no longer in good conscience offer Israel unquestioning support. I'm not alone. Polling of young American Jews shows that with the exception of the Orthodox, many of us feel less attached to Israel than do our Baby Boomer parents, who came of age during the era of the 1967 and 1973 wars, when Israel was less of an aggressor and more a victim. A 2007 poll by Steven Cohen of Hebrew Union College and Ari Kelman of UC Davis found that although the majority of American Jews of all ages continue to identify as "Pro-Israel," those under 35 are less likely to identify as "Zionist." Over 40 percent of American Jews under 35 believe that "Israel occupies land belonging to someone else," and over 30 percent report sometimes feeling "ashamed" of Israel's actions.

Read about America's first female black rabbi.

Hanna King, an 18-year old sophomore at Swarthmore College, epitomizes the generational shift. Raised in Seattle as a Conservative Jew, last November King was part of a group of activists who heckled Netanyahu with slogans against the occupation at a New Orleans meeting of the Jewish Federations General Assembly.

"Netanyahu repeatedly claims himself as a representative of all Jews," King says. "The protest was an outlet for me to make a clear statement, and make it clear that those injustices don't occur in my name. It served as a vehicle for reclaiming my own Judaism." (Read more about the debate on a Palestinian state.)

A more moderate critique is expressed by J Street, the political action committee launched in 2008 as a "pro-Israel, pro-Peace" counterweight to the influence in Washington of the more hawkish American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Simone Zimmerman heads J-Street's campus affiliate at the University of California-Berkeley. A graduate of Jewish private schools, she lived in Tel Aviv as an exchange student during high school, but never heard the word occupation spoken in relation to Israel until she got to college.

During Zimmerman's freshman year, Berkeley became embroiled in a contentious debate over whether the university should divest from corporations that do business with the Israeli army. Although Zimmerman opposed divestment, she was profoundly affected by the stories she heard from Palestinian-American activists on campus.

"They were sharing their families' experiences of life under occupation and life during the war in Gaza," she remembers. "So much of what they were talking about related to things that I had always been taught to defend, like human rights and social justice, and the value of each individual's life." (Read the top 10 religion stories of 2010.)

Even young rabbis are, as a cohort, more likely to be critical of Israel than are older rabbis. Last week, Cohen, the Hebrew Union College researcher, released a survey of rabbinical students at New York's Jewish Theological Seminary, the premier institution for training Conservative rabbis. Though current students are just as likely as their elders to have studied and lived in Israel and to believe Israel is "very important" to their Judaism, about 70 percent of the young, prospective rabbis report feeling "disturbed" by Israel's treatment of Arab Israelis and Palestinians, compared to only about half of those ordained between 1980 and 1994.

Ben Resnick, 27, is one of the rabbinical students who took the survey. In July, he published an op-ed pointing out the ideological inconsistencies between Zionism, which upholds the principle of Israel as a Jewish state, and American liberal democracy, which emphasizes individual rights regardless of race, ethnicity, or religion. "The tragedy," Resnick says, is that the two worldviews may be "irreconcilable."

Still, after living in Jerusalem for 10 months and then returning to New York, Resnick continues to consider himself a Zionist. He quotes the Torah in support of his view that American Jews should press Israel to end settlement expansion and help facilitate a Palestinian state: "Love without rebuke," he says, "is not love."

Auto Loans Terms: Credit History & Score | Finance Reference

When applying for auto loans, it is very important that you should know all the terms and definitions that are associated with the lending industry as it helps in making an informed decision. There are several terms which matter a lot in auto loans and hold quite prominence and two of these terms are credit score and credit history.

Credit history: there are three different credit bureaus in America which are responsible for the credit, lending and payment records of all its citizens. These bureaus hold all the information one can have on the transactions of lending and borrowing of citizens. They contain payments, missed payments, time of payments, defaults, repossession cases if any and the amount of debt one has.

Moreover, they also judge the person?s credit worthiness as to how good or bad he/she has been in paying back the taken loans. This means that they provide the information which allows lenders to judge whether the applicant can be trusted with the finances or not. A bad history signifies that the applicant can default o the loan in the future making him/her a credit risk.

Credit score: if a person says that the whole working of the lending industry is based on the credit score then it won?t be completely wrong. After all, even if it has fallen from its pedestal and people just use it to judge the interest rate; it still matters a lot and is always checked. This is the score that the credit bureaus rate on the files that they have on applicants. When the lenders enquire regarding an individual, they are shown the person?s credit record along with their credit score as to what the bureau thinks they fair on the repayment meter. A high score signifies good record with few problems and a low score signifies a lot of problems.

Falling six-ton satellite headed toward Earth (Reuters)

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) ? Predictions for the timing and path of a defunct NASA satellite falling to Earth shifted on Friday and officials put North America back in a potential area where the debris could come crashing down.

The research satellite -- about the size of a bus -- is now likely to tumble to Earth between 11 p.m. EDT Friday and 3 a.m. EDT Saturday, showering pieces over an as-yet unknown part of the planet, NASA said.

The satellite is expected to pass over Canada, Africa, Australia, and large stretches of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans during that time, the U.S. space agency said.

Scientists are unable to pinpoint the exact time and place where the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, or UARS, will return to Earth due to the satellite's unpredictable tumbles.

"The satellite's orientation apparently has changed, and that is now slowing its descent," NASA said.

Stretching 35 feet long and 15 feet in diameter, UARS will be among the largest spacecraft to plummet uncontrollably through the atmosphere, although it is a slim cousin to NASA's 75-ton Skylab station, which crashed to Earth in 1979.

Russia's last space station, the 135-ton Mir, crashed into the Pacific Ocean in 2001, but it was a guided descent.

NASA now plans for the controlled re-entry of large spacecraft, but it did not when UARS was designed.

The 13,000-pound (5,897 kg) satellite was dispatched into orbit by a space shuttle crew in 1991 to study ozone and other chemicals in Earth's atmosphere. It completed its mission in 2005 and has been slowly losing altitude ever since, pulled by the planet's gravity.

As of 7 p.m. EDT Friday (2300 GMT), NASA said UARS was about 90 miles above the Earth.

Most of the spacecraft will burn up during the fiery plunge through the atmosphere, but about 26 individual pieces, weighing a total of about 1,100 pounds (500 kg) are expected to survive the incineration and land somewhere on Earth.

The debris field spans about 500 miles, but exactly where will depend on when UARS descends.

Initial predictions that took into account increased solar activity, which heats up and spreads the atmosphere, proved inaccurate, as the satellite shifted position and slowed its descent. North America, which was out of the probable impact zone, is now considered a possible target, although an extremely unlikely one.

With most of the planet covered in water and vast uninhabited deserts and other land directly beneath the satellite's flight path, the chance that someone will be hit by falling debris is 1-in-3,200, NASA said.

"The risk to public safety is very remote," it said.

The satellite flies over most of the planet, traveling between 57 degrees north and 57 degrees south of the equator.

The satellite is one of about 20,000 pieces of space debris loitering in orbit around Earth. Something the size of UARS falls back into the atmosphere about once a year.

NASA held a news conference earlier this month about UARS' re-entry and has been posting daily updates on its website.

One popular way for businesses to market products online is through affiliate marketing. This is where the products of one company are sold through many different companies. All of the other companies share the profits of selling any items that are made by the original company. This is a good technique for small businesses who want to get their name out on the Internet. Another way that businesses can market products is through a one-to-one approach.?Businesses?set their target audience on individuals whom they reach through a personal message. Search engine marketing is where this technique is used most as specific keywords can lead businesses to individuals interested in their products.

Some businesses may also be involved in Internet marketing where they appeal to the specific interests of consumers. Instead of marketing to a wide audience in a large area, these businesses will focus on a particular interest group. This is where marketing may be pointed at a specific age group, gender, or community in which people live. A variety of businesses can find this to be an effective way to make money online.

Now is a great time to use Internet marketing as a way to drive more sales. As more and more people turn to the Internet to find products they would normally buy in stores, online businesses will have big opportunities to drive higher revenues. Consumers have made the switch from shopping at stores to shopping online. The next step is to get businesses ready to market and cater to the needs of this growing number of online shoppers.

Arkansas' lost moon rock found in Clinton's gubernatorial files

LITTLE ROCK, Ark | Wed Sep 21, 2011 6:12pm EDT

LITTLE ROCK, Ark (Reuters) - For years, Arkansas historians have searched for a valuable lunar rock from the Apollo 17 mission, one of the moon rocks NASA presented to each state in the 1970s.

While other states also continue to dig for the rocks that came to be known as the Goodwill Moon Rocks, the mystery in Arkansas was solved Wednesday -- sort of -- when an archivist discovered it in former President Bill Clinton's gubernatorial papers.

Still up in the air is how the moon rock got there.

Bobby Roberts, director of the Central Arkansas Library System, told Reuters the archivist opened a box previously archived as "Arkansas flag plaque." The tiny flag was also sent to space, Roberts said. The rock was inside.

"The moon rock, which is in a plastic container, had fallen off the plaque," Roberts said. "The archivist immediately knew what he had discovered."

Other states such as New Jersey and Alaska have also misplaced their Goodwill rocks, which some experts estimate could be worth millions of dollars.

Some states have found theirs in recent years, including Colorado, where former Governor John Vanderhoof confessed in 2010 he had the rock in his personal collection and agreed to give it back to the state.

Roberts, who worked for Clinton when he was governor, said the moon rock was presented to Governor David Pryor in 1976. He could only speculate about how Clinton ended up with it.

Roberts' theory is that when Clinton became governor in 1978, Pryor left the plaque in the office. When Clinton lost re-election in 1980, everything in his office was packed up and stored.

"Ironically, I moved those papers out," Roberts said. "I'm a historian and I never saw that plaque."

The Butler Center for Arkansas History and Genealogy, which is part of the library system, acquired the Clinton papers in 2004. The papers, photographs and memorabilia are contained in 2,000 boxes.

"We will talk to the Clinton Foundation and the Governor's office and determine where it should be," Roberts said. "It should definitely be in a museum."

Roberts said that the moon rock, which is now in a safe, will be re-attached to the plaque.

Can I Give My Money Away? - The Elder & Disability Law Firm, PA

Of all the challenging aspects of the Alzheimer?s journey, often the most confusing part for families is the financial piece of the puzzle. There are so many rules and restrictions, so many bills to pay and documents to draw up; all while trying to protect loved ones and the funds they?ve got. Most of the time, a family will have been doing their best to provide care for their loved one, but in spite of their best efforts they reach a point where they just can?t do it anymore. When this time comes, families/caretakers begin to realize the inevitability of nursing home care. They begin to look into facilities, and into costs. In Kansas City, they?ll find that memory care averages 6 to 6,500 dollars a month. They look at that figure and think, ?how are we ever going to afford to pay 60-70,000 dollars a year for nursing home care?? They also come to understand that once their loved one is spent down to the Medicaid limits, they will only be allowed to keep a monthly allowance of $62 in Kansas and $30 in Missouri. They realize this and think, ?our entire life savings is going away, and my loved one isn?t going to have anything extra left over to care for him/herself.? Inevitably, as this realization hits, they come to us at the Elder and Disability Law Firm and ask the question they think holds the most potential for easing their worries??Can I give my money away??

The answer to this question used to be pretty simple, but not anymore. This is because on February 8th, 2006, a new law called the Deficit Reduction Act or DRA was signed into effect. Everything that happened before that date follows the old rules, but everything that happened on or after it is subject to the new ones.

Let?s consider how this would have worked before the DRA came into being?because once you understand how it used to work, you can understand how it works now.

Under the old laws, pre-DRA, the state would say that nursing home care cost a certain amount of money, say $3,000 a month. The state would then say that if someone makes a gift, chooses to give their money away, for every one month?s cost of care that they give away they can?t apply for Medicaid for a month. So let?s say that a family chooses to gift $30,000. If the state has set nursing home cost at $3,000/month, the state would instruct us to divide that gift by the average cost of care?in this case $30,000 divided by $3,000, equaling ten. That ten would mean a ten month penalty period in which that person could not apply for Medicaid, and that ten month period would begin immediately from the date of the gift. So say that the family still had $50,000 left after the gift, they would simply use those funds to private pay for care until the penalty period was up and Medicaid could be applied for. It was a great way to set aside funds and protect some of the life savings of the Alzheimer?s patient.

But on February 8th 2006, the game changed considerably. President Bush signed the DRA, and the rules were rewritten. Under the new laws, the state now asks if any gifts have been made, either money or property, in the last five years. They then go a step further and say that if anything has been gifted in that time, unless you are already in a nursing home and spent down to the Medicaid limits, and unless Medicaid application has already been made, then that gift still creates a penalty period, but the penalty hangs around for that five year period. Before the DRA the penalty that gifting created began right away. Now, the gift would still create the penalty, but the period would not start to count down until you were in a nursing home, spent down to almost nothing, and applied for Medicaid. Additionally, the states have raised what they consider the average cost of nursing home care is; in Kansas and Missouri the cost can generally be considered around $4,000 a month, so gifts are now divided by that larger number, but the problem is that the penalty will still hang around for five years.

It?s at this point in the explanation the people are generally shaking their heads?it does sound awfully confusing. So what?s the bottom line?

The bottom line is this: in lots of cases there are still ways to protect moneys, even if you already have a loved one in a nursing home, but you certainly need the help of an Elder Law attorney to walk you through the process; because even though it used to be fairly simple, now there are some major hoops that need to be jumped through. With good legal advice and an Elder Law attorney who knows the ropes, you can save?as a rule of thumb?45-50 cents on the dollar. You never want to be out of money or out of options, and by properly setting things up you will have arranged it so that even if your loved one does need care, they will never be out of either thing, money or options, because you will have taken the proper steps.

Reprinted from Wamda.com

Arabic content fund twofour54 Ibtikar recently announced investment in social gaming sites Jawaker and Tahadi, marking the latest in a slew of investments in the gaming sector since January.

Jawaker is a social gaming company that was started as a pet project by partners Mohamad Haj Hasan and Yousef Shamoun, the Endeavor Entrepreneurs behind Akhtaboot, a Middle Eastern online career network. Jawaker is a multiplayer card gaming website has thus far generated a large online gaming community of over 500,000 registered users. The company has succeeded in targeting the largely under-served gaming market of the Arabic world, which is increasingly demanding high-quality, culturally relevant games.

Haj Hasan said: ?twofour54 ibtikar?s investment in Jawaker will enable the company to capitalise on the rapidly expanding popularity of online gaming regionally. With the region?s extremely high percentage of young people combined with increased broadband penetration, we will look to work with twofour54 ibtikar to expand our current offering and develop and publish a wide range of Arabic card games for the region?s burgeoning online audience.?

The investment marks continued growth for the Arabic gaming market centered out of Abu Dhabi, which is now being branded as a ?the Middle East?s leading gaming hub.?

Autism in Another Ape

Teco shows more interest in objects than in his family?much as autistic children do. Image: Courtesy of Elizabeth Rubert-Pugh, Great Ape Trust

Rambunctious one-year-old Teco, a third-generation captive-born bonobo at the Great Ape Trust in Des Moines, Iowa, has an ape?s usual fondness for games and grapes. But perhaps because of trauma from a difficult birth (his mother was in labor for 60 hours) or a genetic predisposition, Teco is different from his bonobo peers in ways that resemble autism in young children. He could not cling to his mother or nurse the way healthy young apes do instinctively, mimicking the aversion to physical contact seen in children with autism. Teco also tends to fixate on shiny objects and avoids eye contact, and he has trouble coordinating his four limbs. A genetic analysis of bonobos, already under way, may shed light on Teco?s condition and offer new perspectives on autism?s genetic roots in humans.

National Institute of Information and Communications Technology ...

This Unholy Trinity caused the 2011 Japan Earthquake, Tsunami, Disaster. Successful communication experiment of the world?s fastest transmission speed using an optical fiber (March 11, 2011) Three organizations, National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, Sumitomo Electric, and Optoquest, announced that they jointly succeeded in the communication experiment to get a transmission speed of 109 terabits per second using an optical fiber. The speed of 109 terabits is one million times faster than the speed of the optical fiber widespread in households. They realized this achievement using the original technology to increase the number of passages inside an optical fiber, and believe that they will be able to further increase the transmission speed using the same technology. They increase the number of the passage of light called ?core? from one to seven. Increasing the number of cores is supposed to deteriorate transmission because the signal in each core affects each other, but they successfully solved this problem by developing the structure that makes it hard for signals to leak out and opened up the way for practical application. In the experiment, they successfully transmitted numerical data at 109 terabits per second for a distance of 16.8 km. It is about 1.6 times faster than the existing speed of 69.1 terabits per second. This speed means that a two-hour film of the full high definition quality can be transmitted in 0.1 second without compression.

Lower Your Risk in Online Shopping

? ? ? ? ? ? Every year, the number of people who shop online increases steadily.? Also, the trend of shopping through a mobile device is increasing rapidly. Whatever people do, they can easily access the internet and purchase things online.? How convenient is that?

Although there is the hype in online shopping, there are also some risks associated with it.? Number one is security. Some people, who are not used in shopping online, are worried that their purchased products will not be delivered to them or the product delivered is not the expected item shown on the website. But with today's internet shopping revolution, more and more people are doing business online efficiently and honestly.? According to a recent research, only 1 out of 4 buyers considers the risk in shopping online.

So, how can we minimize the risk when shopping online?

In order to lessen or get rid off of the risk is to deal with reputable sellers.

Shopping sites such as eBay, sellers are awarded as they do more successful transactions with buyers. They both give feedbacks to each other ( seller to buyer and buyer to seller). One thing to put confidence on a seller is that they have complete contact information if you want to ask for any details and clarification, they a clear return policy if you wish to return your product, have appropriate shipping policy, the seller have a set of positive feedbacks from previous customers and transactions.? And check appropriate documents regarding your product.

?Another way of minimizing the risk in shopping online is to check the authenticity of the website or store. Don't be fooled with the enticing product presentations, images on the website.? Double check the listings of the products if they match. Most shopping sites have ways of letting the customers view the products through images and description of the products. ?For the payment, check for third-party payment systems such as Paypal, Alertpay, Payment or equivalent. These payment sites have more security in payment processing than paying through credit card.

With the internet revolution, comes the advent of online shopping. Virtually, you can do many businesses online. And that includes, purchasing products on the web. In order to avoid the risk of fraud, learn the simple reminders of double checking the website and before transacting with a buyer. ?And eventually, you'll get rid the risk of online shopping.?

REAL ESTATE . . . loans , lending ... - Real Property Management

? ?

Question by SA_MAN: REAL ESTATE . . . loans , lending , permits , lisence?s , ect.?
if i get my real estate permit, and or lisence am i qualified for a loan ? will banks or other type of lenders loan me money even with no credit ??? im 23 yrs old im going to go get my real estate lisence what should i do from there ??

Best answer:

Answer by lilmama24
being a licensed agent has nothing to do with getting approved for a loan. you will more than likely begin to meet lenders and other people in financial service industry that you can work with, but your ability to get a loan will always be based on your personal income and credit history. at 23 you need to begin building your credit.
while you are preparing for the licensing exam you need to begin interviewing brokers. in ohio where im from you have to have a sponsering broker (an experienced agent with there own brokerage) before you can sit for the exam. you need to determine if you and the broker have like goals. it took me a while to find someone because i have a specific interest in real estate.investments. i prefer working with investors how buy and lease their properties, or rehab and flip. find out what interests you the most. the market is not what it used to be, and the days of getting a license and getting paid quick are over, unless you have a serious plan.there are many areas of real estate, you dont necessarily have to be an agent. property management is a good area. there are always investors needing someone to deal with their tenants, and if you ge tgood at it investors will begin to seek you out.
not to be harsh but it sounds like maybe you need to do some reading about the industry so you can find out what really interests you.good luck.

What do you think? Answer below!

Home Improvement Essentials You Should Be Knowledgeable ...

Secaucus NJ Totowa real estate

In order for my ultrasound technician salary to be productive and can be put to good use, I plan to join the home improvement projects in our locality. Because as an ultrasound tech, I also tend to other needs and this is just another venue for me to express my care, this time not to a patient but to our mother nature. I want to prove to myself that I did not only learn theories, myriad of formulas while I was in one of the ultrasound technician schools, I can also learned some values which could benefit our country and our nature. I have attended the seminar, because that is the first requirement and I think my salary is fine for the donation or fees for the program. I want to join this kind of activities so that I have other activities outside of work as an ultrasound tech. Continue reading below to know more about this home improvement projects and find out if your community offers this kind of beneficial programs. You can find dozens of home improvement ideas to keep you busy for a long time. Three of the things that will affect your choice the most will be your personal tastes, the price and your available time.

However, the average homeowner cannot work up enough motivation to do little improvements around the house. We all know that building something today that can be used for enjoyment at a later time in the future is very satisfying. Then we are familiar with the various items that are required to provide protection for your home and maintain its value. They are not used as much for enjoyment, but putting your home up for sale and then getting the best price is what makes it okay in the end.

The US Department of Energy says that around twenty five percent of energy could be saved if things in your home were running more efficiently. They were talking about things in your home such as doors, windows and skylights or any other elements that have to be sealed off from the outside. Plenty of small holes and aged seals exist that cause these leaks. At this point, upgrade some of the things in your home and get an experienced home inspector to look at the seals in your home. You can invest in tightly sealed frames or other home items that are considered to be energy efficient. If your doors are older, then they could be leaking air, which is why we should discuss energy efficiency and how it relates to your doors. Due to the fact that they have energy efficiency rating that has been given to them, you should choose newer doors for your home. One of the key things that you should do is to make sure that the door frames in your home are air tight. You can also buy additional sealant aids such as magnetic weather stripping and bottom expanders to make certain that all sealed surfaces are airtight. You can make things even more tighter by installing bottom sweeps which have vinyl in it.

If you ever fly over a city in Arizona, California or similar hot southwestern states, you will notice the abundance of swimming pools. However you do not need to live in a very hot climate to own or enjoy a concrete, in-ground pool. Of course these hot dry climates are not a pre-requisite for owning an in-ground pool. There are many designs, options, extras and sizes from which to choose. This is one of those home improvement projects that is fun to do or watch the installation crew do. Obviously this is one of those areas in which you can spend just a little or really sink some serious cash into. It all depends on what you can afford and what you want.

These are just a few important tips and home improvement project ideas that will add value and beauty to your home. Whenever you need to hire professionals to do the job properly, be sure you go with proven and established businesses that will guarantee their work.

U.S. shows flag in Tripoli, pledges support (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? The United States gave Libya's new rulers a very visible show of support on Wednesday when a senior envoy visited the capital and praised their efforts to assert control of armed groups three weeks after Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown.

Washington has taken a back seat to France and Britain in NATO-led air strikes that helped the ragtag rebel coalition take Tripoli last month. And, wary of a backlash after their military takeovers in Iraq and Afghanistan, U.S. officials are at pains to avoid seeming to take control of oil-rich Libya.

But the visit of Jeffrey Feltman put an American accent firmly in the center of a Tripoli recovering from six months of civil war. The State Department's top Middle East diplomat assured interim leader Mustafa Abdel Jalil of continued NATO support and played down fears of a hostile Islamist takeover.

Putting a spotlight on the U.S. role in what is seen so far in the West as a successful intervention comes at a welcome time for the Obama administration as it grapples with complex problems elsewhere in the Middle East.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, glad for a fillip to his re-election campaign from helping topple Gaddafi, is expected to visit Tripoli in person soon.

Western powers, which had reconciled with Gaddafi in recent years, are now competing with each other and with the likes of China and Russia for the favor of his successors, looking for trade deals on oil and gas and a share of building contracts.

Feltman said Washington remained committed to NATO and Gulf Arab air operations to thwart any threats to civilians, as Gaddafi's fugitive spokesman renewed claims that the ousted strongman was still in the country and rallying his forces for a fightback in several stubborn loyalist bastions.

Feltman also praised Abdel Jalil's National Transitional Council (NTC) for progress toward bringing the army, police and a host of local and partisan militias under its control.

Foreign powers are worried about the risk of anarchy after 42 years of Gaddafi's eccentric personal rule at odds with much of the world. The European Union on Wednesday demanded an end to arbitrary killings and detentions by both sides and especially to attacks on sub-Saharan Africans and black Libyans, who are widely accused of having fought for Gaddafi.

ARMED GROUPS

Feltman, an assistant secretary of state, said: "We remain encouraged by growing command and control over security and police forces. We understand that this is a difficult task.

"Libya's interim leadership is solidifying the steps and integrating militias under one civilian authority."

Asked about the strength of Islamist groups in the rebel coalition which overthrew Muammar Gaddafi last month, he said: "We are not concerned that one group will be able to dominate the aftermath of what has been a shared struggle."

He also said he expected the new rulers in Tripoli to "share concerns about terrorism" with Washington. Some senior Islamists among the rebel forces have in the past been allied with enemies of the United States, though they have since welcomed cooperation with the Western military alliance.

Sarkozy may visit Tripoli and Benghazi, the seat of February's uprising, on Thursday, a French magazine said.

Historic tensions between the two cities -- capitals of provinces that were united as Libya only under Italian colonial rule in the 1930s -- are a concern for those hoping the NTC can rapidly establish democratic government nationwide.

NTC deputy chairman Abdel Hafiz Ghoga told Reuters in Benghazi that the chairman, Abdel Jalil, and the NTC would remain based in their eastern stronghold, rather than in the capital in the west, at least until the "liberation" of those cities remaining in the hands of Gaddafi's supporters.

The declaration of liberation, which some NTC officials have said might also be dependent on Gaddafi being found or killed, is a key signal to start a timetable for drawing up a new constitution and elections. There is already much debate within Libya about how such political decisions are to be made.

GADDAFI HOLDING OUT

Gaddafi has not been seen in public since June. His spokesman, Moussa Ibrahim, speaking on a satellite phone from an undisclosed location, told Reuters the 69-year-old leader was still in Libya, in good spirits and ready to fight back.

"The leader is in good health, in high morale ... of course he is in Libya," said Ibrahim, who declined to give his own location. "The fight is as far away from the end as the world can imagine. We are still very powerful, our army is still powerful, we have thousands upon thousands of volunteers."

While his opponents would scoff at the idea of a successful Gaddafi comeback, they have been concerned at the difficulties they have had in taking the final bastions of his support.

Interim government forces are besieging one of those last bastions, Bani Walid, 180 km (110 miles) south of Tripoli, along with Gaddafi's hometown of Sirte on the Mediterranean coast and Sabha, deep in the southern desert.

After a week of fighting NTC forces at Bani Walid have been urging people to leave before they try to storm the town. Scores of cars packed with families left Bani Walid on Wednesday as NTC forces broadcast messages telling them to go and handed out free petrol to help them evacuate.

"There is a lot of random shooting. It is much safer for my children to leave. Gaddafi militia men do not want to negotiate," Fathalla al-Hammali, 42, said, driving away from the town with his three young children.

Daw Saleheen, who is heading regional forces battling for control of Bani Walid, said he was ready to use heavy weapons against and estimated 1,200 loyalists, who had placed rockets and mortars on civilian homes as well as dozens of 200 snipers.

"We know all their positions," Saleheen told reporters on the northern outskirts of his home town. "We have sent a message to all civilians that if they can they must leave now."

Independent information from the town is limited to comments from refugees. Previous deadlines set by the NTC forces have passed with little change in the stalemate.

Gaddafi's whereabouts are unknown. His wife and three of his children fled across the desert to Algeria. Another son, Saadi, who once played professional soccer, has joined some other high-level loyalists in Niger, further to the south.

A Niger government source said on Tuesday that Saadi had been transferred from the northern desert town of Agadez to the capital Niamey late on Tuesday: "He is in a secure place. Like the others he is here on humanitarian grounds. He is not being sought after. He is under surveillance, not imprisoned."

However, the source added that he was not free to move.

Gaddafi and another son Saif al-Islam, long the heir apparent, are wanted for crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court (ICC), though NTC officials have said Libyans would like to try them first.
