Kindred spirits
After hearing this week how Julia Child would have been 100, I decided to try her Boeuf Bourguignon.? Not being carnivorous, I wasn?t sure if I was going to like it.? I couldn?t believe my taste buds; all I could do is mimic the Knopf literary agent in the film Julie & Julia and say, ?umm.? I blogged about being head over heels for the film and lives being intertwined in: http://lindalaroche.com/blog/travelogue/im-so-lucky.
Paying particular attention to duplicate the recipe exactly, I couldn?t help but notice how her writing in Mastering the Art of French Cooking, jumped off the page. Being curious, I went on a hunt.? Here?s what I found? she enjoyed writing short plays (that?s how I began to write) and regularly submitted unsolicited manuscripts to the New Yorker, but none of her writing was ever published (ditto). When she moved to New York, (this is familiar) she worked in the advertising department of the prestigious home furnishings company W&J Sloane. After transferring to the store?s Los Angeles branch, however, she got fired for ?gross insubordination.? Being a former interior designer, I was fired for the same reason.? Our lives have paralleled in more ways than one. ?Goes to show you with the right combination of passion, fearlessness and butter, anything is possible.
