AUTOS: Next Mercedes SL550 Revealed

Mercedes-Benz has released photos and full details of its new 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL550, the sixth generation of the SL Class, with its global debut set for next month?s Detroit Auto Show.

(Photo: Mercedes-Benz) Powered by a twin-turbo, direct-injection 4.6-liter V8 rated at 429 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, it's a significant performance upgrade over the previous SL550, with 47 more horsepower and 125 pound-feet more torque. Weighing about 300 pounds less than the former convertible through extensive use of aluminum helps the new model live up to its SL ? Super Light ? moniker.

That weight savings and extra power enables the new SL550 to claim a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds, according to the manufacturer.

But the real story with the new SL is in the design. On the outside, the 2013 SL wears an all-new look that still draws on its heritage. The front end has hints of earlier SLs, with the upright grille, more vertical headlights and character-lined hood. The overall silhouette is intended to lose the wedge-like side surfaces of the previous model to give the new one more the look of classic SLs.

(Photo: Mercedes-Benz) At the sides, accent folds and vent strakes are the key visual elements that draw on the past, flowing smoothly into somewhat plain rear quarters that blend into the expansive, slightly sloped rear deck, the large triangular tail lights and the dual exhaust outlets in the rear bumper.

Inside, the SL is truly a knockout. With a wing-inspired dashboard and instrument panel and a cockpit-like center stack and console, the 2013 SL class gives off a premium vibe, almost into the hyper-luxury category of Rolls-Royce and Bentley. Materials quality, fit and finish appear to be excellent, with the whole package coming together in one coherent, high-tech look.

The seats offer another brilliant look, with detailed surfaces, sculpted bolsters and Air Scarf headrest ducts to provide warmth even with the top down. The folding hardtop opens or closes in less than 20 seconds in near silence, Mercedes says. It's also transparent, either as standard glass or the optional Magic Sky Control roof that can be lightened or darkened at the push of a button.
